Yeah so the speedometer needle on my 97 Escort is not moving at all, all other gauges [tach, gas, temp etc.] work fine, and the actuall backlight on the speedo works, just not the needle.

Any ideas on what the problem is? Or should i hunt a new one down? and if so, does it matter what year its from as long as its this GEN of Escort's?

is the check engine light on? have it scanned, it if's p0500 it's the VSS.

if the check engine light isn't on it's likely the speedo itself is bad.

Any 97-02 cluster will work to the best of my knowledge.

You do know you can change just the speedo. If you take the cluster apart (easy) the gauges just plug in. The speedo is the same in both clusters so you can just swap in a new speedo into your tach cluster.

CHECK THE GROUND WIRES AT THE BATTERY.

If one comes off it can stop the speedometer from working.

I fixed a 98 Escort once that someone had replaced the speed sensor and the cluster and it still didn't work. Took me every bit of 5 minutes to find and fix the problem. I didn't even charge him.

^^he can either lube the speedo cable or replace the speedometer. i snagged one from the junkyard that has max speed of 120mph with a 6 digit odometer. my old one bounced like crazy and it had 85mph with 5 digit odometer. how big r his tires? if he went from 14 to 15 without changing the VSS, that will do it.
