Programming keyless entry?

I have a 97 Escort, it only had one remote with it when I bought it. I got another one and verified all the numbers on the back match exactly to the one that came with the car.
The second remote came with programming instructions that are very unclear if that makes sense. Instructions say to short two pins in the programming connector to set the car to program mode.
Instructions I have found on here require turning the key from on to off to set programming mode.
I am confused as to what needs to be done. I don't want to lose my working remote and would like to get the second working for the other drivers in the family.
Can someone walk me thru programming this? Please.

your car should program by cycling the key from off to acc 8 times. on the 8th time the car should lock then unlock the drivers door. then you press a button on one remote. the door will lock then unlock again. then you press a button on the second remote. the door will lock then unlock again. turn the key off and the door will lock and unlock again to let you know you are out of programming mode.

Thanks! I have been under the dash trying to find the programming connector the instructions called for and all I see is the OBD connector. Will give that a try. See if these old fingers can do 8 key turns fast enough to set it.
