Is it possible to put ZTEC Head on 3rd gen short block? Do the 3rd gen SOHC and ZTEC share the same block? What's the difference? Different bore and stroke? Different crank?

I notice that the ZTEC's have higher RPMS at same speed in high gear. I have 99 Tracer. It would be simpler to swap head than engines. Is DOHC head belt or chain drive. I can imagine some mounting points for tensioner, etc may be different.

Blocks are similar but not the same. This swap has been done but is very impractical. It is simply much easier to just swap the entire Zetec engine. Even better to grab the Zetec's manual trans too. The Zetec+Trans swap is 99% bolt-on swap.

    I give you the ZVH..

The Zetec has longer rods, bore stroke are the same, I think the crank is the same.

For the other question: the higher RPM is simply different gearing in the transmission. Transmission gearing dictates engine RPM vs. Speed, not the other way around. The Zetec's G5m manual has shorter gears and a 4.10 final vs the tall gears and 3.85 (or something) final in the CVH's G5M. It is a common practice to swap the 5th gear from a CVH trans and put the 5th gear into the Zetec's trans; as this will reduce 5th gear engine RPM a few hundred revs.

EDIT: My bad CVH head on a Zetec block has been done. Zetec head on CVH block has not been done.

OK, Looks like head swap not practical. Whats involved with bolting Zetec engine to the 5 speed manual. I really want to reduce the RPM's in the top gear. I am not going to the drag strip.

Never done it but it is suppose to bolt up without modding think you need the Zetec starter.

IIRC, the pent roof style valve train on the ztec head interfear with the cvh dome top pistons. it COULD be possible, if you replaced with flat, or custom recessed pistons.. but that defeats the purpos.

I pretty much convinced the head swap is not practical.

The pistons on the sohc and Dohc are different. If your not willing to do the work I would just get a good used motor.
