has anyone tried to bore the 91-96 1.8l bp into a 2.0liter and then us ztech pistons from a newer escort? i was looking at the haynes manual for the escorts and it looks like its possible, but when i look at the block for the 1.8 there's not that much room. has anyone tried this?

thats true but i've heard of crazier things. i was also thinking about the bp head on a ztech block. it would breath better that way. the timing will have to be changed, but once again is that possible.

The 1.8 is a Mazda, the Zetec is a Ford. What are the chances of that working out?
That just reminds me. We did plant tours of my corporation the other day. I work for the industrial division, but the rest of our company is heavy into automotive. No specifics, but one part we manufacture is used in a Jeep, a BMW, and a Mercede's 8O

Given Ford owns Mazda, the newer cars have a LOT more in common with each other than people think :wink:

The engines in the new Mazda 3 (and the 2.0L in the Protege) is straight out of the Duratec family.. but with a "mazda tuned" head. On the mazda 3 forums there was quite an uproar when somebody mentioned that their cars had Ford engines in them. :D

BTW.. good luck getting the BP & Zetec (which is an evolution of the CVH) to fit together. Those engines were designed separately by Mazda & Ford before they started developing together.

Flyin' Miata took a 1.8 engine, overbored it and built a stroker kit stretching it to a 2.0. They then used the 99+ Miata head and cams and after a bit of porting, put out over 160hp naturally aspirated.

Same engine was later upgraded with an FMII turbo kit, where it ultimately put out 377 hp.

The stroker cranks are supposedly available - you need only call Flyin Miata to verify.

Not really,

1.8=mazda
1.9=ford
2.0 spi=ford
2.0 zetec=ford
2.0 zetec svt=ford

Trying to put ZX2 pistons in a mazda motor is like boring the 1.8 to 1.9 and putting the 1.9 pistons in there...

Like I said it'd be easier/wiser to just get some custom wiseco pistons.

1.8=mazda Yes
1.9=ford Yes
2.0 spi=ford beefed up and revised cvh
2.0 zetec=ford If I recall correctly this engine is re-badged for Mazda in the same way the 1.8's were re-badged for the Escort. Take a look under the hood of a newer 2.0 protege.
2.0 zetec svt=ford Just a beefed up Zetec

More commonalities:

The new 2.3L (Dura tec?) will be shared between Ford and Mazda's small car lineup, and even Volvo I think as well.

Ford Ranger 3.0 and Mazda B3000- both use a 3.0 of Ford origin.
Ford Ranger 4.0 and Mazda B4000-both use a 4.0 of Mazda origin.

As far as engines and trasmissions go, it's becoming harder and harder to draw a line between "family" owned manufacturers like Ford, Mazda, and Volvo. There is so much commonizing between these three manufactures it's unbelievable. Even if the engines and drive trains are not the same, as many parts as possible are being interchanged between the companies to cut costs.

Yeah, the auto tranny service kits are the same for the 1.9 escort and the kia sephia.

The Kia Sephia uses the BP 1.8 that was in the GTs, not the Ford 1.9s...

The Zetec is all Ford, not a drop of Mazda in it. If you put a 1.9 CVH and a Zetec side by side there so simular it's scary.

That's what I meant. Mazda uses the zetec in the same manner Ford used the BP mazda engine. ie, put a new valve cover on it and away you go. It is indeed all Ford. :wink:

booya, ZVH :p

I should put a zetec head on my CVH and call it a CTEC :roll:
