OK so lemmi start out with this 94 lx 5speed 89,xxx miles. In the last year since i got the car i have done timing belt, full tune up new freeze plugs, and breaks. Now the bad things that are going on right now. in the last 2 weeks the car is running extremly high in temp and i cant figure out what it is, i checked the thermostat fine, checked head gasket fine, but im still losing coolant somewhere and its not burning it and its not leaking out anywhere that i can see, and now tonight driving over a friends hose the car started bucking and rumbling something fierce like its runnin on 2 cyl. im at a loss right now i dont have the money to get a new car or to get honestly anything so i am stuck with this one. any other ideas on what could be going on?

When you did the timing belt, did you replace the water pump?

    Do a compression check.

Bucking could just be from a vacume leak (it would have to be a pretty big leak). Like EGR or intake gasket, tear in the intake tube.

If your water pump is failing, it will eventually seize, and you will be replacing the timing belt again. My scort is at 200,000 miles, and gets 42 mpg. believe me, I didn't want the car when I got it, but now Id like to see it to 300,000 miles. Not a perfect lil ride, It will need things, thats just how it is, but when its right, its really right.
Theres lots of threads on here to help diagnose the problems your having, so poke around. In the long run, everything you replace will just serve to keep it running better longer.

I also think that your water pump is failing. When it get bad enough, it will be obvious that it's leaking at the pump, but if you wait that long you risk other damage that's much worse.

And saying that you hate your Escort here isn't going to bring you a lot of love either.

sounds like you need some help from a mechanic. did you check the oil color? Is it milky? Are your plugs covered in white? if so you are gonna need a headgasket.

if something is really wrong with the engine dont worry a replacement engine is a $100-$200 from a wrecker and you will have alot of fun swapping the engine in your driveway. Should only take a weekend and you will learn alot about your car :)

When my car starting bucking and literally started running on two cylinders replacing the plug wires solved the problem. As for the cooling issue, that is a totally different issue that hopefully gets resolved SOON.

What do you have? Sounds like you have an automatic for one. They don't do well on gas. My '91 GT gets 34 on a trip and 29 - 30 back and forth to work and that's seeing a few 7,000 prm shifts in there to get past the slow people on my way home :) I think I would get about 25 if I pounded the car really hard all the time.

negative.. i have a 1.9l 5spd 95lx. i bought it a few months ago for 800$ and it runs pretty well.. interior is shot to shit tho. replaced plugs, pcv valve, flushed radiator.. changed oil, changed air filter.. cleaned out the egr valve ports (which were clogged shut with carbon) and the intake ports as best i could.. soo in im in the process of changing the fuel filter, egr valve itself and starter relay.. but i'm not to mechaniccally inclined on fords to see why i would be getting such shitty gas mileage.. its only got 109k on it

Am I the only one who thinks it could be a screwed up timing belt replacement? Did you check alignment when you put it back on? Even if it's only off 1 or 2 teeth can mess things up pretty bad, including over heating and plugs not firing at the right time (running off 2 cyl?). If you still have a coolant leak check the hose going out of the water pump... I had some corrosion in there which gave it a slow steady leak... but it was impossible to see until I had some stuff cleared out of the way. I've replaced at least half the hoses and all the clamps looking for that one damn leak, but it hasn't leaked since this past february so it's looking good (knock on wood).
Anyway, I replace the water pump because I though it might be the source of the leak... but really it was fine, just the hose coming out was the problem and I've got a '95 with 170k on it.

I would guess that you have a bad radiator cap. Your boiling your coolant away. Without pressure your temperature is higher. Check your exhaust for the green or yellow radiator fluid.
    Good Luck

Ok so finally i figured out what is wrong, Coil pack was causing the misfire replaced that, driving ont he highay yesterday overheated and took it to the sop to get it fixed, thermostat was bad replaced it and they did a pressure check good but it was still over heating. head gasket is bad on the exhaust side its leaking into the water jacket so as soon as it hits the exhaust side of the motor its flash boiling so thats why i dont have a leak or any milky oil or smoke. so now i have to figure out of 700 bucks to get it fixed b/c i dont know what the hell im doing or to replace the engine with a used one and risk having more problems with it, so im stuck betweebn a rock and a hard place.
