Hey, so long story short I started to take care of my grandparents' E46 325xi. Problem is, it's automatic and absolutely not my cup of tea. Handles nice, but just not a fun car. So, I've been looking at bargain bin cars nearby... But in the northeast salt, the $2k Miatas in California are more like $3k, and the $3k Miatas are $5k. It's an awful market. Sooo, instead I've been trawling the bargain bin for easily-fixable or underlooked cars which I can beat on and get 3 pedals back in my life.

Now, the last time I did this I ended up with a ZX3 while my WRX was in the shop... I bought and sold it for $1300, and I enjoyed it more than the WRX during the short time I've had it. Now that I'm looking for bargain cars, I've stumbled upon a nearby ZX2 without about 170k on the clock, some minimal fender damage (will have to check the frame myself), and for $1000.

I was really pleased with how chuckable the ZX3 was - might've been because it was $1300, but I figure the same-ish car that's lighter, lower, and cheaper can't possibly be less fun. Is this worth going for? Am I going to probably get that $1000 back if I sell it later? Or should I just be patient and put the $1000 towards the blacktop MR2 build that dances around in my head?

the zx2 is not same-ish as zx3. The zx2 is better than the zx3. with springs, shifter and some mx3 seats the car will feel completely different than a regular zx2. Put an intake and exhaust and it will even sound better than a regular zx2

I enjoyed our 98 ZX2 back in the day... I did stiffen the suspension... I currently have a beater S/R version that is even more enjoyable (has a few extra ponies & better clutch than my old one)...

Passed by a "ZX2 Sport" and was wondering what the "Sport" part meant.

the sport is just an appearance package. The sport package includes the following:

    -- fog lights
    -- rear spoiler
    -- 15 inch wheels
-- head rests on the rear seats
    -- bright oval exhaust tip
-- "sport" badging on the rear

these were the things which made it a sport for 98 and 99. From 2000 -2003 there was no longer a "sport" package available. Other things to note about a sport are:

all "sport" are considered HOT versions. There is not a cool version sport. These two designations only used in 98 and 99

    98
-- seats offered pocket on the seat back of the passenger seat
-- sport seats had piping around the seats. regular cars did not have piping
-- sport seats were all cloth. Regular zx2 were cloth and vinyl

    99
-- sport had leather wrapped steering wheel
-- only the sport was available with charcoal interior (s/r used 99 sport interior)
-- sport seats were embroidered with zx2 logo on seat back
-- sport was not available with medium graphite interior
-- sport seats used different pattern for seat inserts than regular zx2

I had a sedan and didn’t like ZX2’s but after getting a ZX2 when sedan needed replaced. I do miss the 4 door but I love having a sunroof and ZX2 is pretty fun to drive
