I live here in California, and I I have a 92 escort GT that is failing the 15 MPH test on hydrocarbons, but passes at 25 and fails the NO range at both the 15 and the 25...any thoughts I was thinking catalytic converter.

Will a rich/lean condition cause it to fail in those areas.

I just want this thing to pass so I can drop in this NA blue printed High Compression motor I am building.

A bad cat failed my car for our Austin Texas testing. New cat and basic tune up and passed with flying colors.

Thank x I figured as much, I checked the voltage off of the O2 sensor and I am not rich/lean, timing is dead on, compression is good (no oil blow by) on the pistons so I figured it had to be the cat.

Do you have any experience with Bosal?

91-92 had a titanium color.

it is currently bone stock, but I got some pretty cool stuff in the war chest I am about to break out, once I get this smog issue taken care of...Have any of you used Bosal Cats...it says it is a direct OEM replacement which is what I need anyway.

if you can cut and weld just get a universal cheapy cat and weld that puppy in, I did and I was failing emissions, I passed with NEW colors after a new cat! better than a new car, I had 15 HC's at idle and you're allowed 220 I think and had like 60 HC's at 25 mph and was allowed 170, yeah! and you can tell if your car runs lean or just spot on by the oxygen left in the exhaust, if there's still oxygen in the exhaust that means your cat is burning up all the extra fuel and there's still oxygen left you're running leanish, which is what I do for a little extra fuel economy and my car has 180k on it and I didn't tune it lean it came that way when I got it which it was stock, not anymore but still runs half lean instead of lean to rich it's ideal to rich.

can't splain it all that well but I think you get the idea.

new cat, it'll pass, and btw junkyards can't sell cats I thought, at least washington yards can't! never seen a cat in a yard, but a universal cheapy is like 50 to 60 bucks, I got a little better universal cheapy for just 65 bucks and it's got good flow. works great

Typically a high NO reading could be due to an EGR valve that wasnt working, or whose EGR tube was plugged up. I generally think of catylytic converters as dealing with hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide (HC and CO).

I dont know if cars in Californa were different in 1992; I live where the emissions test is to the 'US federal' standards. I have a 92 LX with the 1.9L, and it didnt come with an EGR setup at all. I also have a 91 LX & a 94 LX that both have the EGR valve & pipe, (though the EGR pipe routing is different on the two cars). Could it be the emissions testing may be expecting your car to have an EGR valve - that it never had?

CA junk yards and all that I know of pull cats as it Violates federal laws to sell used emission equipment...My NO is high at both the 15 and 25 MPH test HC is bad at 15 but passes at 25 I am just going to put on a new cat.

my car barely passed ca smog but i live in a normal area with the 2 speed idle test and luckily no dyno test like yours and we don't measure nox is is great cause these motors are usually high in nox.

I just wanna pass

I just want to pass smog as I bought this car lien sale and to get it registered it has to pass smog, I seen a Bosal cat for 118 like 130 shipped, which sucks because, I have to wait to get paid again because I had to pay the machine shop for the work they just did for the motor I am going to drop into this beast once I get it all legal.
