Ever wonder why you never see a Turbo´d NHRA drag car.
"No, its not because blower dont have lag"
I got this from Turboford.org and thought is was pretty interesting:
Almost right, Hawk. " Ohio George" Montgomery, is the racer. The car is a 69/70 Mach I. Here´s part of the story. "In 1971, we started the turbo program, but had the rug pulled out from under us when Ford pulled back from racing..... potential of Turbo-Boss was terrific...went ahead without Ford funding. The overall results of the turbo program were nothing short of phenomenal. It absolutely dominated AA/Gas Supercharged in two major events I won, & it upset NHRA to the point that they handicqapped it so bad, they made it absolutely non competitive. They didn´t know the potential of the car, and it ran so quiet that they thought I was holding back so much that they slapped a 0.50- second index on me. I was the only drag racer running turbochargers & the 1975 rules stopped turbos, period. The engine in that car was a 440-cid BOSS 429 turning out around 1400 HP. (This is 1970. VR) I built a 73 Mustang called the BOSS-TURBO with another twin turbo BOSS 429. Spent about two years in developement & was getting about 1800 HP out of it. NHRA found out about it, quickly banned car before it ran. .....involvement with NHRA ended.... (wonder why. VR)
"noise sells"
