I would want to build one myself since i have the skill.
Ive been researching all the stuff i need to do to make it work. I would buy a whole car so im not buying all this crap at the lkq pick a part.
There prices are going up since they are Chinese owned now.
They bought all the ecology wrecking yards so they control the prices now.
I bought my 01 that had a rebuilt engine that the owner didnt know about for 200 bucks on offer up. It was on craigslist with a phone number that didnt work. I found it on offer up (same car) sent a message and i got through to the owner.
Had a blown head gasket..i actually had to get a donor head and rebuild that.
Its a great little car now.
So i think it was just ment to be.
I really want to do the wagon.
I did find a clean 2001 sedan with 103,xxx i can get for 200 bucks .
Sounds like a good candiate.
If i swap zetec do i need a 2002 as the donor or will 01 work since its the same year as the one i want to swap?
Stick to your plans and do a wagon/Zetec swap. I did the swap on mine and I love it! It's fun to squirt around the streets with and utilitarian at the same time. Not that it's in the same league but kind of like owning a Porsche Cayenne. Porsche speed with crossover utility!
You're in Cali and cheap 2nd and 3rd gen wagons that are clean are easy to find. Just keep your eye out and it'll come. I see them on C-List on an almost weekly basis. Grab the crashed ZX2, pull the tranny and motor but leave everything else intact and park the car. While you're looking for the wagon body to put it in you can go through the tranny and engine and do all the clean up/upgrades you want while you bide your time.
My suggestion would be to do a long block rebuild meaning pull the head and check the cylinder walls for excessive scoring. If the walls are clean and the crosshatching is still good then a set of rings should complete the lower end freshen up. If you really want to be anal you can tear the bottom end apart completely and install new crank bearings and have the crank, rods and pistons cleaned up. New wrist pins and clips would be good. If you really want to get crazy you can have the crank counterweighted and the journals polished and the rods/piston weight matched but now we're getting into race engine territory. Go over the entire head to make sure the valves are sealing up nice and tight. If not then a 5 angle grind would be a nice way to get that nice seal. Not sure how it would affect smog but it would also be a good time to get in there with some emery cloth and clean up the air flow path by knocking down some of the casting flash along with polishing(not enlarging. That'll definitely not pass smog) the roof of the air flow path leaving the floor rough for proper swirl.
Better throttle response? Now's the time to drop in that lightened flywheel.....
Tranny's are tricky since not a lot of people have the knowledge or tools to properly service them but the G5M is pretty basic and can be rebuilt with mostly hand tools. My suggestion would be to replace the stock diff with one out of an '03 Protege or, if you really want to get crazy, a helical LSD from MFactory. I'd also replace the gear set with one from a ZX2 since the gear ratios are a little shorter which makes it fun for street driving except I would replace 5th gear with an Escort one since they are a little longer and are better for highway RPM's.
Even with all this I find myself reaching for that extra gear so, ideally for me, a G6M swap would be ideal. Just gotta find one and figure out how to make the cable shift work rather than the bar shift the G5M uses.
