I was wondering which engine is the best to put in a 96 Escort shell?

I had the 1.4i LX for 9 months. I drove it way too hard and ended up blowing the engine, wrecking the brakes and CV joints. I was going to get rid of it after I got a new car but can't bring myself to do it.

Does anyone here know the best engine for this car? It was already very light as it had no electric windows or anything fancy and now I'm gutting it, it's way up off the arches. So ideas of lowering springs and harder suspension would be appreciated aswell.

Also the car I'm driving now can beat Civic SiRs, so I'd like the new engine to have a good bit of power and torque.

Thanks in advance,
Andy.

Sorry, meant to add that to the original post.

I'm from Ireland, it's an Irish car.

It was a 1.4i SOHC 8 valve 75Bhp. Not made for the bashing I gave it.

I think the 2.0 Ltr Zetec is the one they use in the Ford Mondeo over here. As far as I know it was used in the 2.0 Escorts just newer. (143 Bhp, 140.1 ft-lbs torque). There everywhere over here. 2.0 Escorts on the other hand are quite rare.

The 1.6 RS turbos are very rare over here aswell, don't think i'd find one for a long time.

Would the Mazda MX6 engine go in without too much hassle? The V6? I don't know which Mazda engines go with Ford Escorts.

Thanks.

The MX6 engine would fit an American Escort but yours is completely different from what we have so I doubt it would work.

Think i'll go with the 2.0 litre then.

Has anyone got any tips for good sports or racing suspension?

Is the 1.4 from the same family as the CVH 1.6?
If it is, the 2.0 Zetec should have the same bell housing bolt pattern. Could keep your tranny, just need to get the 1.4 flyheel on the zetec.
From what I can see the 1.4 is a CVH variant. The problem with him using the 1.4 flywheel is that the Zetech has its crankshaft trigger on the flywheel. If the 1.4 flywheel doesn't have the trigger then the engine won't run and I know American CVH's don't have it there.
