I am reading post after post about all of the different engines that can be swapped in. What I want to know is what is going to be the best bang for my buck to put into my 96 Escort LX. I am going to be commuting to school and I know that my engine is going to die eventually, so once it does, I'm going to toss in something else and drive my Grand Prix while I do that. So I know there are going to be a lot of different opinions, but I'm just looking for something that I can do not cheap, but not extremely expensive. P.S. if u have ne how-to's on the engines that u recommend, that'd be great, cause I can do most of the work myself and with the help of friends.

Well, I could get lucky, but I figure 19 year old, driving bout 50000km a year, even with regular maintanance, I'm gonna get MAX 6 years outta it, and the 50000km is probably the bare minimums I'm gonna drive, I'm not even driving to school every day yet and I'm still doing 5000km every 2 months or less. (it's got shy of 80000km on it still though!)

I've got 380,000+ km on mine with no signs of significant engine degradation, other than slightly low compression on two cylinders due to worn rings. Unless you abuse it, your engine may last longer than you expect. And this from a guy who didn't believe in domestic small car engines when he bought his Escort.

Well, I planned on swapping Tranny, wiring, and computer, as for how much to spend and how much power, nothing too outrageous, I wanna be able to beat the little civics around town here, but I don't wanna be spending so much I could go out and buy myself a decent Mustang GT, or MX-6 or bmw 325i.
