1997 2.0 SOHC "P". Looking for a serpentine belt. I have tried the one by the application (505K6) and it is too short. I thought I had a workable one in a 515K6, but after a couple days of driving(and stretching) it is a smidge long and squeals occasionally. Going to try a 510K6 tonight to see if I can get it on. Anyone else have issues getting a belt? As far as I know it has stock pulleys. It's just an old wagon, nothing hopped up about it...

The 505k6 should be the correct one. Maybe try putting it on a different pulley last? are you sure you're pulling enough on the tensioner to put the belt on?

I've run into the same problem trying to install a new correct size belt, using the small alternator pulley as the last one. New belts do stretch a little, and the ribs don't seat as deeply into the other pulleys until it's been run a bit. Plus, the outside rib on some alternator pulleys is a bit larger than on others.

I ended up using a small pry bar with a 1" blade to pry the belt onto the alt pulley after making sure the belt was fully on the other pulleys. It helps to have a friend hold the tensioner fully retracted while you do this.

Some Escorts have dealer installed a/c instead of factory installed air. Not sure whether there's a difference in belt length of the two or not. I assume there is since Rock Auto lists belts for factory air and dealer installed air separately. I tried to find information on the lengths of both belts but wasn't able to find the length of the belt for dealer installed air. This was just a suggestion that I thought might be helpful. My '97 wagon has dealer installed a/c. I don't know how common this was but thought it may have been pretty common since the Escort was manufactured as an economy car.

I don't know either but I'm heading home from work now, so will be trying a 510K6 when I get home. Will report in the morning!

510K6 went on begrudgingly. What a PITA! I'm thinking if I ever do this again I am permanently removing those lower plastic panels that shield the belt from roadway water and such. Putting that belt on from the top with no way to reach in from below sucks.

Agree totally with a new belt being a PITA to get on. If they are easy to get on, they are likely too long. I own 5 2nd gen Escorts, with 2 others in the family. I think only one of them still has the splash shields.
Im not looking to find intact splash shields and install them either.

I had the belt fall off my car due to water splashing up. I installed the splash guards to prevent it from happening again.
