well where do you want to start and how is your budget?
maybe a cold air intake kit,
remove resonator and replace your muffler (depending on emissions in your area) with a flow through type muffler,
either 1.8 swap or 2.0 spi swap,
try a custom body kit like i'm working on now (2000 ford mustang)
remove side moldings
lowering kit s/r struts or tokico hp series struts
body colored mirriors
it all depends on what you are looking for really!

First of all, is this your first 'project' car? Is this your only car? How much are you willing to spend on this car? What would you like you car to be when you finished?
Ask yourself these questions, it's all a matter of time, money, and taste. If you take the performance route (which I would do), investing more under the hood than on the outside, my best advice is live and die by the dyno my friend. It's a reality check and the best darn friend a tuner can have!
