 I have a 91 escort gt with the GTX motor swap, and am currently on my 3rd trans. I have a SPEC stage 3 clutch, but the trans itself is junk. I snapped the ring gear, after I got the trans rebuilt 20 miles ago. Unfortunately they did not replace the gear because they said they couldn't find one anywhere, so I am out the $400 for the rebuild. I was then told by several people that these transmissions are not going to hold up to the power. I just want to get the car on the road, but these transmissions are KILLING me. Thanks in advance for whatever help you can give me!!

it would be in your best interest to get onto cardomain and find the guy from FL with the insane 450 hp scort that he's running 11's with and see what he has done...I know with a drag car it has to have a strong tranny...he would be the one I would chat with...he has dyno and time slips posted

:werd: here's a link.

He ran 545 hp and 11.22s on his stock axles. oh yeah...the difference is I think he has an auto?? I dunno though, he doesn't show any interior pictures. Your best bet would be to try to find a low mileage GT in a yard somewhere. Or see if you can import a GTX tranny.

Those are your friends my man.

I'm not sure what he's running either...but the gtx tranny would be interesting...you would have to use the gearing in your case though since they are awd trannies...well that's the only way I've seen them go

I thought about the gtx tranny, which would be nice, but very difficult to switch to awd. I called Corksport, and they said that they are in the process of building a differential with steeper gear ratios, which they claim will be stronger. Thanks for the advise guys!!!!

I was under the impression that the JDM GTX was FWD??? How else could you get a jdm GTX and install it in a USDM Escort if it's AWD? Unless it's like the usdm 323 gtx and is transverse mounted? I dunno.

James, you should see how the tranny is built....the thing is almost crazy how it is set up...but sure enough the engine sit in sideways and it's awd...kinda like the Lancer EVO....

I still havn't managed to find a trans yet that I think will stay together. I can get one from a junkyard for $350 or a remanufactured one for $1,000 with a 1 year warranty, but thats a little steep for a stock escort trans......

First thing you need to do is find a shop who knows what they are doing. The GT Manual trannies aren't extremly strong but they will hold 2-300HP if you take care of them and don't drive it like you stole it all the time.

So my advice is find a well known shop in you area... and don't let them get buy with the "we can't find a part" BS. It's out there somewhere. If ford doesn't have it Mazda probably does. Someone makes one I'm sure. I don't think I'd let them get away with not reinbursing you for some part of the new tranny.

I've got some ideas on how to beef up the tranny that I hope to build soon. Hopefully I can produce some extras.

The there are 2 trannies that bolted the the BP

the G5M-R (90-91) mazda Protege LX BP-ZE
and the G25M-R (92+) which bolted to the BP-DE and the BP-ZE

i know of proteges pushing 230+whp through their stock g5m-r.

also the tranny which bolts to the f2T (88-92 probe/mx-6 GT) id also a "G" tranny. but its bolt pattern is unknown weither it will bolt to a BP. The probe tranny is beffier than the protege tranny. You could swap the internals from it. and the 5th gear will lower your rpm at 65mph to ~2400
