I guess that this is tie rod ends or ball joints?

There is no play when pulling the wheel up and down just side to side

Could this be causing the erratic handling?

Also which part is bad when this happens?

Finally is it a hard or expensive job to do in the street?

Thank you!

Sounds like tie rod ends. Spend the money and go get both the inner and outer tie rod ends. Yes that can be, and most likely is the cause of your handling probs. If not fixed, it will also wear out your tires prematurely. Which means more money to spend.

This is how the techs at work check for bad stuff before alignments. Lift the car like 3-4inches up. Take a breaker bar and put it under the tire...if the tire moves up and down, watch the balljoint for movement.

then with the tire off the ground shake the tire side to side...if there´s excessive play its a tie rod end.

This may also be a sign of your rack & pinon starting to go so don´t forget to check it as well.I currently have two waiting for me to replace them. One is wat bad(the car tugs right under accelerationand hard left under braking, you can see the tire change direction when someone else is driving it)but all of the ball joints and tierod ends are ok, so I know the rack´s gonna go.

I too have heard that the racks tend to go in scorts. That would surely cause the side-to- side play you are describing, and would become a safety hazard if not corrected.
Good luck!

Just a word to the wise, if ANYTHING on your car starts to deteriorate, get it fixed as soon as possible. When I first got my car, I was changing the muffler and noticed that the bolts holding the rear sway bar on were very rusty. I decided to change them and only spent a few bucks for new bolts. When I tried to take the old ones out they broke in half!
If they had broke while I was driving the results could have been disasterous and I would have definatly payed alot more that a few bucks and 15 minutes or so of my time.
