I have an 89 pony with a 1.9 auto slug under the hood. We´ve owned it since new.Now i have two spare motors and a five speed which keeps invading my dreams but i know the swap will be a royal b!t(h.So maybe I´ll keep the trans and swap the motor but, who´s the victim?a GT perhaps?or what about a tempo or topaz GS 2.3?will it bolt to my trans?Did either of them come with a turbo? If so,were any cast in brazil or another country so i can put it in import class?Emissions are not a problem so..What are my options?

sorry bud
i dont think many ppl here have a first gen and its a totally different car compared to the second and third gen
and dont sweat that the car is an auto
get a torque converter and a shift kit and youll do better than all/most of the 5 speeds

Oh believe me I push everything as hard as it can go.My car is like a rolling protest to the R.C.W.code book.
But it´s tired. It has over 200,000 on it and still has the original motor.I have two spares waiting just in case but ,I would rather put in something more easily modified.I lost my 94lx 5 speed that I had put my heart and checkbook into. But we´ve had this one since new and it´s not going anywhere. So I´m trying to make it at least as nice as my 94 or at least as fast. But no I don´t really want to change the tranny just the mill.

I´m sawapping a Zetec into my 89 GT. I´m not sure if the tranny will bolt up or not. I think it will though. The engine gets here tomorrow so I will know then. As far as the Temo 2.3 DON"T BOTHER. I looked into it and it gets the same HP as the 1.9HO and it is heavier. If it was the same 2.3 they had in the Mustangs I´d be all for it. The Tempo 2.3 was an OHV engine, and the intake and exhaust manifold are on the same side of the engine which I think is a MAJOR design flaw. WHat I would REALLLLLYYYY like is to make a kit like they have for the Focus where you can drop a 5.0 engine and rear end into my Scort. How SWEET that would be. It would defeat the fact that I bought it for the MPGs though, but the Speed. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Not sure if this will help, but...I have an 87 egt, I know that they changed some things from 87 to 88 (tailights, bumper, and stuff like that) I also "think" that they change the engine slightly, even though its still a 1.9 same as the 87. If the motor mounts and stuff weren´t changed (don´t see why they would have been) then you could get a motor out of an 87 egt with a five speed tranny. With that you could turbo it pretty easily. All you would have to do is get the exaust manifold, turbo, and anything that hooks up to it out of and EXP turbo. (there those weird escorts that look like mustangs..sort of) If that sounds like to much work (although I don´t think it would be if you had the proper tools, then I would definatly make the switch to the five speed, get one of your "back up" motors rebuilt with better internals, and slap the combination into your car. I don´t know if an EXP turbo would fit the 89 motor, but maybe someone else knows.
