when i was under the car yesterday, i was looking at my exhuast, well iirc, the cat converter is the first componet after the exhaust manifold, well instead of that, there is this this tube slighlty bigger then the exhuast pipe that looks kinda like a resonator, except it has all this slits in it, what the heck is this?

If it wasnt there then the torque that the motor produce will break the exhaust maifold. There has to be flex points in the exhaust system or the the wole line will try to flex hitting the body and put under so much stress that something has to give.
