I have a choice between two cars I may be able to buy soon. They are a 2000 Contour SE V6 and a 1999 Crown Vic Police Interceptor. My question is what should I pick. I say this should be easy because these are the only two cars I am concidering at this time so You guys shouldn't have to go off about Miata's and SHO's and S2000's if you know what I mean. The reason I am only concidering these two cars is because I am buying them at a Government auto auction where I can get them hella cheap (Last one I went to a Contour SE V6 went for about 4 grand and there wasn't a car that went over 6 grand) and these are the only two cars there that caught my eye. I worked out some pros and cons for the two, but I just thought I would get some feedback from my pals here. The reason I am concidering hetting these one of these cars is because the Pimp_scort seem to be having a hard time coping with the summer heat here, and I have been talking to egtdude about using it as an R/D car for Bare End Motorsports. Anyway, my Pro's and Con's

Contour SE:
Pro:
V6 = decent gas mialage/decent power
Many performance upgade options
Small 4 door that actually has enough room for people in the back seat.
I like the way they look

Con:
Many performance options = light wallet (cuz we all know I'm adicted to speed)
It's tan. That color look good on girls, but not my car.

Crown Vic Police Interceptor
Pro:
Its got a cop motor, a 4.6L plant. Its got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. What do ya say, is this the new Pimp mobile or what?
V8 = More power OH Oh oh
Cop Engine = MORE More power
Probably has one of those awsome cop spot lights on it (not for sure yet, will see it on the 26th)
Not as many performance options = fatter wallet
What better way to out run a cop than in a cop car??

Con:
V8 = more gas = lighter wallet
Something about them not likeing to be rear ended. It already hot enough in AZ with out the explosions and fire balls
It's big

Anyway thats all I can come up with for now. Just let me know what you would do in this situation.

well..if you get the Crown Victoria...at least don't let it white!!! People will hate you on the road hehehe ...well i do hate the owners of white Impala, Ford white mini-van and Crown Victoria....cauz you never know if it's a damn got that is riding right behind your a$$ ! `:)

but...i guess you'll be able to make some fun when you get bored on the weekend hehee...you'll be able to put some redlights in you dash and pretend that you are an off-duty cop like some dude on the board who got arrested once :)

I'd have to go with the crown vic. I like my space in my cars. Something that i can be relaxed in. I also like the rumble that a v-8 makes with flowmasters. I'd also get it for the fact when your driving around people kinda slow down and make complete stops. I'd get it for the laughs..............

It is white, and that is another Pro I forgot to post, Freaks people out. People will think twice when they want to pass me on the two lane road by my house that everone think is the Autobaun. And cops may think twice before they chase after me on same said road.

Pimp - the crown vics are much fun. Yeah, they do have that problem with being rear ended, but they were tested and still fall within regulations ie. no explosion with a 35 mph impact. The explosion/leak promblem was noticed because usually when somone hits a cop car in the back, it is on the interstate and the speeds are a lot higher. I wouldn't worry about it.

I would go with the crown vic, I too like my space.

Hate to tell ya, but while the suspension on the vic is done to the nines, the engine is bone stock. No more power than a std. vic.

Matt 8)
I'm not sure that's entirely accurate matt. I do know that the Police interceptors have a chip in the ECU to give it better shift points for better mileage and to not slow them down in chases.

I would have to concur with everyone else, I'd go with the Police interceptor. Tint the windows black and put on those raingaurds while you're at it. if it has a spot light people won't be able to tell the difference until they see your license plate.

As for performance upgrades, there's always the Mustang 4.6L SVT DOHC heads you could throw on there, not to mention exhaust, intake, and the ever powerful Ford Factory built Supercharger. 8O

That would make you quicker than any crown vic out there. I'd love to see a CV pull a 13 second quarter mile.

I'm not going to tell you to get an S2000, Miata or whatever the other car was....Get the Crown Vic. Contours look so homosexual to me... My friend had a 98 SE w/ the I4 in it & had to get rid of it because it kept overheating and no one could find the problem. it only had like 50k miles on it...

Of course the cons are the poor gas mileage for the 4.6 and the fact that if you get rear ended hard on an *empty* tank of gas you could suddenly find yourself a lot hotter real fast...

Thanks James, thanks a lot for giving me go fast ideas for this car, jeez  j/k I never thought about the supercharger. That would be Su-weet. I did think about a cobra engine though. Don't know if you ever heard of Bob Bonderaunt's school of high performance driving or not, but they buit a couple cars they called Cobra Vics. Basicly they put a Cobra DOHC engine in the car and fit a 98 cobra Bumper on the front. Then there was the 6 point roll cage and 5 point harnesses on the front and rear seats. Ever since they brought it to my school when I was going to mechanic school I wanted one. As far as the engine goes, I am pretty sure it has beefier cams as well as an upgraded ECU as well. And I'm kind of lost with the whole the suspention was done to the nines comment. Is that good or bad??? Pleas explain what or where exactly the nines are.

I don't know about the origins of the "to the nines" comment, but I do know that the interceptors have near perfect shock/spring/swaybar tuning for high performance driving... An ex-gf of mine, who was doing some ride-alongs w/ a few officers for her criminal justice major, claimed that the vic pulling a 40mph U-turn within a 5 lane road was the highlight of her rides... the power and speed of the caprice (with a true police package motor) was a close 2nd.

dude I can't believe your asking this. can you imagine the fun on the freeway... pull over for a minute and just watch the brake lights Mwahahaha

I'd say go crown vic myself. The contour would be cool. But lets face it you like the 1/4 mile. I've always wanted to see a nice crown vic done up.

and besides its not like you have to keep the 4.6... *coughsupercharged460cough* hehe I know I'm crazy I can't help it. I'd drive a rocket ship if I could.

hahaha matt. that'd be great. need to go from AZ to New york? fire it up! 10 minutes later...we're here! Anyway. yeah I'd go with the Crown Vic. You're making me want one now to mess with people on the road. they're such aceholes here in ft wayne...

I'd keep the 280 (4.6) and throw on the dohc svt heads, intake and exhaust, then S/C it.

You could always buy the 5.4 Triton V8 and dump it in there...that thing made 385 hp N/A in the 2000 Cobra R...the newest SVT 4.6 made 385 but they had to supercharge it to do so.

I'd love to see a nicely done Crown Vic pull some amazing times in the quarter mile too. maybe a 13 or so? If you do that I'll drive down there in my GT-x after it's done and we'll go to the track.

I see what you mean birddog. my coworker has gotten me thinking about small block 350s and 69 Camaro SS Yenko 427s.

If I wasn't so wrapped up in making my car a somewhat sleeper, I'd have a crate 350 from Chevy in my garage right now. from there I'd bore it out to 6.0 (which is what? like a 396 or so?) and I'd throw on some Callaway heads/headers and be making this thing a big bad block of 450lb ft torque. Then I'd find myself a late model Camaro SS and rip that 350 out and throw my built block in it along with a new clutch and driveshaft. Then I'd get myself some nice 18" Z rated tires with Corvette Z06 rims for the rear and 17" Z rated tires for the front.

Just imagine that thing. It'd kill everything on the road...and then I could always supercharger it. 8O it'll look like a lowely SS until you run the 1/4 mile with it...can anyone say 10 second Camaro? :cyclopsani:

Wow zz your such a rebel. Here everyone is talking about buying a Crown Vic so I can go fast and you throw in the Cotour so I can stop better. I'm glad to know there are people out there who can think outside the box.

No matter which car I get I would probably throw a pair of flowmasters on either one. The Contour would definatly get dual exhaust. I'm thinking maybe NOS for the CV to start out. NOS sell an awsome setup for the 4.6 that goes under the fuel injectors to put the NOS and extra fuel in right where the injectors are so there is no need to drill holes in the intake or TB. A supercharger would be on my Christmas list for either car as well. Damn you guys, I wanted to buy a car that I wasn't going to supe up. You keep feeding my ailment. I seriously think I have a psychological disorder sometimes that makes me have to make cars go fast. Maybe Freud would explain it as some kind of sexual link between me and horsepower. Not an hour passed after I got my Scort did I start planning and even implementing ideas to give it more power. Grrr, Stop the madness!!! (but it so fun though, fun things can't be bad for you... right?!?!?!)

The more I think about it though the more I am leaning toward the Crown Vic. I have ALWAYS wanted a cop car, but I'm just not sure if it is feasable right now. AZ is the 2nd highest in the US for gas prices not to mention the whole manditory insurance thing and having to pay for a smog check when you get the car registered on top of the registration fee. I dunno, I'm still up in the air here so keep the suggestions rolling in.

10 second Crown Vic police interceptor. now that would be truely awesome Justin. I say buy what you want, when it's feasible. If you don't want the gas prices to jump into your wallet get the Contour.

It took me a year before I started to realize the potential of my 1.8 but since I found this site I've had so many plans, from an AWD US spec Escort (not a very viable option) to painting my car WR blue pearl and rebuilding my 1.8 for 250 hp. (It'll be there someday)

All of this is just talk right now but I'm gonna try to go for the 2nd plan stated there. After it's done I think I'll go for the Chevy 350 idea, because by the time that'll happen i'll prolly be 25 so my insurance will drop off quite a bit so it will be feasible. Indiana has mandatory insurance too. you can't legally drive without insurance here. Which sucks because some places won't sell you a car without proof of insurance. If it wasn't mandatory I don't think I would drive without it anyway, especially if I'm buying an 02 Camaro SS.
