I remember someone talking about a weight that Ford put in the glovebox to make it easier for it to open. How does one remove it?

When having a glove box out, I dont recall seeing a weight - not that I have really looked for it. My wife and daughters keep the 'glove box' filled with so much miscellany that I have to keep the owners manual (and any gloves) under a front seat.

there are two stops that bend in to release the glove box so you can remove the whole assembly.

there are screws that hold the glove box onto the dash.

there are screws that hold the two halves of the glove box together.

Thanks. I guess my question is is there a weight to help the glovebox open? I read that it weighs around 5 pounds which seems kind of unlikely but I was just wondering.

Never noticed one in mine. I guess they figure you'll have enough crap in there that it won't have trouble opening.

I'm not sure what the thought is for why it's in there - if it's to help it open quicker/easier, if it's to keep it from rattling, or some other reason.

People have taken them out with no ill effects that I'm aware of.

Wells guys i have finally done it took about 15 min with power tools.

The weight is inside the glovebox plastic casing.

    1. Remove the glovebox from the vehicle, pull the tabs in and then remove the screws that hold the unit in place

    2. Dissasemble the glovebox you have 3 screws in each side and 2 in the middle the hold the locking mechanism.

    3. Once you have that off, u will be able to see the metal casing inside. It is fused to the outer plastic part of the glovebox by around 10plastic rivets.

I used a angle grinder and went to town on those "rivets" just took the tips off and applied some leverage force and the metal plate/weight came off.

    4. Just assemble the glovebox back toguether, put it back and enjoy......

    5. The 1.5 pound weight savings(weighed in scale).....LMFAO. i was hoping it was heavier but what the heck, it only took 15 minutes.

So there u go for anybody who is thinking on doing such thing to their escorts.

it's not there for the purpose of opening easier. gravity will do it just fine with out. it's there as a safety feature. just like under the drivers dash area. it's to help protect your knees from getting in the dash in an accident or so i have been told.
