I never knew my car had this until a couple of weeks ago whe one of you mentioned it in a kill story. The name is appropriate - I get more air when I use VICS too :-]

That was me! :-] VICS= Variable Inertia Charge System. Upper intake plenum has four butterfly valves which are vacuum operated. They open at 5500 rpm to allow more air flow into the engine. which is why we can sprint our engines out to 7k rpm. I love the sound of it myself ;-)

The intake plenum doesn´t have an "upper" part... the entire thing that the intake runners come off of is the intake plenum itself. Anyway, VICS is just a "direct connection" through the BOTTOM of the intake plenum, into the part of the intake runners that is just before the valves. The reason why is because you want high velocity air for the low end torque, and just a crapload of air for the high end horsepower cause you´ve already got WOT and barometric pressure forcing the air in.

Anyway, an aftermarket K&N FIPK kit lowered my VICS initiation from about 5,500rpm to about 3,800 rpm. lol. Yeah I get 25mpg, but that´s driving HARD- like abover 4500rpm all the time. On top of that, I love passing somebody and hearing the soft psschhh of the vacuum letting off the actuator as I putt on by. It´s almost like I have a turbo! Wait... no it isnt :)

And if the 1.9L had DOHC and vics it would be a lot better... well, it would be a 1.8L! :) The vics really sold me. When I test drove the GT for the first time, I went easy for a 1/4 mile and I was like, alright... I´m sick of this granny shit, let´s see what this piece can do.. so I drop a gear, hit about 4100rpm, then hear the VICS psccch and I´m like... "yeeeah. I´m gunna get me dis..."

Well, you don´t gotta be a moron about it siragan. I said ´upper´ because not everyone knows exactly where the butterfly valves are.

The 3rd gen SPI 2.0 has somthing simular, "Split Port Induction" it also has 4 butterlflys in the intake mani. Stock is set to about 3,000 RPM´s, but its motor driven not vacume like the 1.8´s.
It does help by making a wider power band when compared to the 1.9.
