I am new to the escort thing and have a few questions. I came from the 5.0 mustang crowd where we have mass air flow meters. is this the same as the vane air meter? If not what are the diffrences and how does this thing work. Does any know of any square to round adapters that i could use to fit a conical k&n? Thanks for you time (and answers hopefully)

The vane air flow meter (VAF) uses a flapper door (vane) to measure the air taken in. More air coming in, the door opens more. Pretty simple. You probably know the mass air just uses a hot wire type sensor. They perform the same fuunction, just in a different way. As for intake adapters, yes you can get them to adapt a round cone style filter to the VAF. HKS makes one, and I am quite sure that zxtuner has some also (www.zx2racing.com/store), which would most likely be cheaper than HKS. Hope that helps a bit.

You almost forgot to mention Mike, the VAF actually is measuring the air coming in Volumetrically (accomplished by the flapper). Oh yeah, and if the airbox is open enough you can hear the cool sound of the flapper hitting open.

Other then that...they SUCK and are a limitation in design. Too bad our 2G EGT´s didn´t use a two way MAP sensor. That would make things SO much easier.

A VAF cannot be interchanged with a MAF without switching the computer as well. The ways they measure air volume it totally different. On the other hand most VAF are interchangable with different VAFs. Just make sure the wires connect to the correct terminals on the new VAF. Most VAFs have 4 wires. Two are signal wires, signal in and signal return, and the other two are for the built in IAT (intake air temp sensor).
