Hey Everyone.

I just want to know if anyone has experience with common problems on the 3rd Gen Escorts. I recently purchased a 1997 LX Sedan from a friend and I want to get it into top shape before I drive it too far/hard. The only thing I know is the previous owner had the oil changes done every 3000 miles (I have all the little slips from the garage he took it to with mileage on them) but other than that Im not sure. The car looks like its in pretty good shape, but there is a lot I cant see. The only reason I have the car is because the owner passed away, and hence doesnt need it anymore.

The car currently has ~104,000 miles on it. So far I have changed the oil, spark plugs and wires, and put summer tires on it. The front brakes look OK, the back ones needed some minor work when I took it to get inspected, so they changed out the shoes and hardware and freed a rusted e-brake cable. (If I had known there were issues, I would have done it myself.)

So, Im planning on getting the t-belt chagned, and doing the water pump and serpentine belt while I am at it. I would like to run a few tanks of gas through it and then change the fuel filter, but other than that I dont know what to look for. Is there something with the 2.0 SPI engine I should look out for?

Thanks in advance for the input.

Just out of curiosity, where in upstate NY are you? I´m in potsdam right now and probably over the summer doing research work at Clarkson University. Just wondering because there aren´t really any FEOA´ers around upstate NY and your name is Clarkbug so I was thinking maybe you were a clarkson student. Chances are if you´re on campus I know what one your escort is :)

Concerning the engine, I´ve seen a few 2.0 spi´s have the tensioner pulleys crap out, so if you have the money, you may want to swap those old ones out and put in some fresh ones when you change the belts.

Nope, the Clark part has nothing to do with Clarkson, sorry. Im actually from a town about an hour North of Albany, NY. Right now Im at school in Schenectady. I looked at going to Clarkson/SUNY Potsdam for the 3-2 program for Chem/Mech. Engineering, but it just was not to be.

So the tensioner pulley, eh? How much will that set me back, any ideas?

Im planning on changing the timing belt and water pump soon, so Ill do a full coolant flush before I drain the system for the pump. I hadnt thought about doing the brake fluid, but I might look into that.

Im planning on doing the air filter as soon as I pick one up (just lazy on my part, I guess) and I will run a few tanks of fuel through it to get the crap outta the gas that was sitting for a while before I do the fuel filter.

I just put on some summer tires, so they are newly balanced. And I think I might take it to get aligned shortly, it pulls to the right. I dont know what will have to get changed out to fix that....

Thanks for the input, any other ideas???
