My friends 91 Escort with a 5 speed won't come out of reverse. We tried banging it out but with no luck. We got under the car and the linkage looks fine, is it a throw out bearing? Any help is appreciated.
This is not your throw out bearing. With your engine shut off, you should be able to push the tranny in and out of any gear you want, with minor force, without using the clutch at all. Don't do it just for fun, but it can be done. Therefore it's not a clutch problem.
Has he run with low or no tranny fluid? Me thinks you're looking at replacing the tranny. Push the clutch in and push the car forward or backward a few feet, making sure to get the wheels aligned straight forward. Then see if it will disengage reverse. If successful, never use reverse again until you swap the tranny.
sounds like fluid issues or the syncro is broken and jammed. to all yes i know reverse doesn't have a syncro but that doesn mean another gear is messed up causing teh issue.
Well i feel bad for you, but , thats the same problem i had with mine, and when it finally did pull out of reverse after bangin and bangin, i heard parts flyin around, and this is how i pulled out my tranny
with my car since I did my swap, my car goes in and out of reverse pretty hard... I have to give reverse extra force. The rest of the gears are fine.
I had trouble with filling the tranny fluid during my swap since that piece of shit speed sensor broke on me. I think I filled most of it back with the car jacked up on one side and I filled it through the axle hole.
but I also put a kartboy shifter in there as well... so I thought maybe that had something to do with it.
Reverse is the only gear without a synchromesh. Engaging it should be the most difficult, all other things being equal. However, it should pop out just as easy as the others.
