I heard some place my 94 Escort 1.9 has a four speed automatic transmission. I know it has OD, I know it has a Drive, I know it has a Low.There is no second on the shift lever.
The question is:
Is this called a three speed transmission, since it has at least Low and high, ( where is second) not to mention the OD, or is there a second gear but not selectible from the shift lever, as there is no indication of a second gear on the selector. I never counted the up shifts from start, I can start there I know, but I dont have the car with me today. Can any one tell me just how many gears this car has not including the OD? Thank you,
Joe

My 1995 LX has a 4 speed automatic with a lockup type torque converter. The 4th speed in overdrive. When the lockup engages it feels like it's shifting so you would count it "upshifting" 4 times.

1 -> 2
2 -> 3
3 -> 4
Lockup

Although I'm not completely sure if it locks up inbetween gears sometimes.

Um just to clear things up, "lockup" isn't a gear. The way an auto tranny works is through a thing called a torque converter, which is basically a method of transferring rotational motion through a FLUID. Lockup is just when instead of that rotational motion being transferred through a fluid, it is transferred through a mechanical connection. The result of this is greater power and efficiency because not as much energy is lost in friction and in the fluid.

It's basically the same idea as the clutch/flywheel interface.

My 94 has the lock up conveter too, does the 95 shift lever show a second gear or does it just show OD, Drive and L ?
Joe
Yes. Do you need a pic? I can take one and email.

Mine in a 1995 LX.

And yes "lockup" isn't a gear, but it feels like one when you are driving.

My 94 has (on the shift indicator on the floor), the Overdrive symbol,then the D, then the L, it has no S for second. I went out and drove the car last night and when in D there were two up shifts from low, so there are three speeds which shift up from a start, then the over drive (when selected) so that makes four. But my 94 dosent have a S on the shft selector, does the 95 ? I wasnt sure on your response if the 95 has S on the shif selector. Its possible they added that for 95 if it does. This would of been really helpfull to have the second ger manual down shift of second gear (if it exsists,) during my trip across the Rocky mountains.
