I have been lookin into someday attemping to turbo charge my 94 gt. I have been trying to learn about the whole process and what it is going to take to do it ( i want to learn to do it the right way so i don´t screw anything up ) . I understand alot about what you are talking about when talking turbos, and i know my way around the engine fairly well, but never got into turbos enough to really do it yet. I feel the turbo is the biggest add on with the most power improvment. i´m sure there are other people here that are thinking of trying the same thing. I would like to know what turbo is best for the 1.8 and what will i need to get it working without major mods. what do i need for my exaust manifold and and stuff like the oil line for it and intercooler, and what engine mods do i need to achive this. i´m not looking to race it so i don´t need something crazy, just want to add more power to it, everyday street use with as little mods as possible. just want a basic turbo setup. i´m sure there are others that have the same questions that i have. are ther any write ups about it, as for the 1.8. i am trying to learn as much as i can before i attempt it, and want to do it right. i need my car for work and don´t want it down for weeks, or screw it up. can anybody give some info on this subject. it seems alittle harder for us since we don´t have the aftermarket options like the hondas do, like what works from other vehicles. I have learned alot form this site but there are the little things that i am not sure of. info on this subject would help greatly

I´m not a guru at all, but I am in the process of turbo´ing the 93GT.

What you need as far as parts depends on how exotic you want your set up though.

But we all know going turbo means having a turbo. I spent alot of time plugging numbers and the best match to the GT´s 1.8ltr is actually a T3 with a .40 trim....however, IHI made a VJ-20 for the 323...so that´s the easy way to go. You´re going to need a manifold to get the exhaust to the turbo, most common is the manifold made to the VJ-20, but it could be modified to fit anything.

When turbo´ing, since its a custom project you should probably intercool aswell. Plus, getting the air cold will add a few extra horses and help your engine.

You´re going to want a Blow Off Valve, prices go from 20-400 bucks....anything that will blow off excess pressure while shifting to prevent backspin on the turbine will work.

Well that´s the basics, now to understand what you´re doing. By spinning a turbine wheel with exhaust gases your are spinning an impeller that is compressing air on the intake side. The compressed air has the effect of a higher air density (like going from 5500´ to sea level), except you actually surpass atmospheric pressure quite a bit. So, as more air is forced into the engine the engine creates more power (rough estimate is 15 horse per lb of boost). 14.7psi is 1 bar in the import world if you weren´t familiar. 1 bar is 1 atmosphere of pressure. So that means at 14.7psi you´re forcing 1 atmosphere over perfect vacuum. Realistically though, if you dont upgrade your fuel delivery system 5 or 6psi is pushing it with the GT´s.

Other then figuring out all the numbers and such, the actual turbocharging part is easy. Its perfect engineering; using exhaust gases to compress intake gases.

The theory of turbo´ing will work on any vehicle, even your 89. However the 91-95´s use the Mazda BP8 which is a great motor to force induction on. If you have a different motor you can still do it, but you´ll have to be the pioneer on figuring out where your boost limit will be.
