Ok Here is the game plan guys. I have an LX. It is the non hatchback style and definately already like the thing. Now the power is no where near the level that I am coming off of. Damn it was fun drving a nissan 240sx. 140 hp/160 ft.lb of tourque. This is my plan. I am not going to be putting much money in the engine right at the moment. Do not tell me the Intake/header/exhaust routine because I already know that one. Do not tell me not to turbo the 1.9 because of what ever reason you may have. These are the things I am going to do I intend a 1.9 turbo straight up and done right. I am in need of infomation on one key point, one part in particular that will help me in the quest to go this route. Is there a turbo manifold available from an earlier model that can be used on the 1.9 engine. For example if you were in the 240 ranks with a KA24E you would go to the Z engine and take its turbo manifold match the ports up right and be ready to go. this is the type of infomation I am looking for. What turbo manifold already out there will match the exhaust side of the engine so I can bolt a turbo on.

Not that I´m aware of, but you could always go to a shop and have them custom build a turbo and manifold for you. I know you like your LX but starting off with an Escort GT and turbo´ing that will be 10 times easier seeing as how you can get a turbo and manifold that already fit up onto that engine. www.corksport.com has a 1.8L BPT manifold for under 300 bucks. viola.

yes there is. I can´t recall the exact model right now but it does exist. I know some of the LX guys have been getting then from the UK fairly decently priced as well.

I´d say go for the turbo. it may not be able to hold much more than 5psi or so though. I know it is not nearly as strong as the 1.8 DOHC motor in the GT. however with some smart building it shouldn´t be to much trouble.

There are 3 ways to turbo. One is get your hands on EXP turbo manifold. Doesn´t metter if it´s 1.6 or 1.9. Or order one from UK... RS model. Or build your own one. There is one guy on escortracing forum who has turboed 1.9. (Red Waggon)

yeah, as said before, 1.6 Turbo has the same head porting as the ford 1.9.

83 or 84 Escort was a turbo. EXP is like the same thing...might want to look for an XR3i Merc ? I think they made a turbo version.

Well if your going to do it...just be careful on the tuning. The 1.9L Ford motor isn´t as forgiving as the Mazda BPD8.

Also I remember someone was saying that some 2.0 Mercs turbo manifold can be used. I´m not sure. The only problem with 1.9 is that many internal parts are .... I can´t say cheap....more like not designed to handle alot. Piston rod joins upper and lower are the main problems, 6 or 7psi max.

They are good internals, just not forged. I actually think with *LOTS* of *Perfect* tuning you could get 10psi. Do realize the lifespan of your motor is going to go to crap. Also, be careful...the 1.9L is an interference motor, and timing is a big issue in forced induction. In the GT you can just pull the timing back as far as you want until the turbo glows orange from combustion taking place in the head, but on an LX you´ll get valves slamming into pistons (or the other way around).

Even being methodical can produce results with you´re car being stuck on the side of the road and you walking. Be prepared, my EGT (nothing related to the turbo install yet) has left me stranded 4 times since last September. Everything from heatercore and ECU fried, to a hole in the gas tank.

If you do things right you´ll spend a weekend doing the install, and 12 months doing the tuning, and hopefully you can find a daily driver at a cheap price.

Denis (turbo guru) last told me he was having probs with his Haltech and couldn´t rev over 4k. Orlando told me the reliability of his turbo motor was so bad he bought another BPD8 and another EGT to drive, then bought a GTX BPT that he´s building for the EGT thats unreliable all the time.

Me, I´ve been lucky for one, and second I´m looking for another EGT to use as a parts car and poorly running daily driver....but that will happen when I actually have money (never).

g´luck --- great sleeper. You should see the looks I get in my turbo EGT. blow off once with a TurboXs Type H-RFL and you´ll see people walk into walls as they stare (or scream when you scare them). My friend said I should get a license plate frame that says: Dont Break Your Neck Bitch.....I´m leaning more to a custom plate that says: I BOOST

For me I will use alot of custom work defiantely top shelf parts bring alot of APex, Blitz, Greddy, HKS, Garret, these are the types of parts I will look at. I know that there are 1.6 sentras throwing 200 hp down turbo´ed so should be doable here to.... Just maybe not much has been done in those respects yet. Good if I can put the time in and do it right. Plus bodywise I have my thoughts already. Lookin to build a quick 4 dr to have besde a 98 240 sx or 350 Z.

The best thing to do is to get the exhaust manifold from an 83-85 EXP or Escort, and get a head from a later 88-90 1.9 HO engine. Since you have an LX it already has flat pistons, and the cumbustion chamber on your head is D shaped in order for the engine to have a decent compression ratio. Some wher ein the vacinity of 9:1. The HO head has an O shaped combustion chamber and a more of a Hemi shaped piston that fits up into the combustion chamber. But with the flat pistons, the compression will be conciderably lower with the bigger combustion chamber. Not to mention the HO Head has bigger valves. Double plus. After that get some injectors from a turbo Thunderbird. If you want to go all out and do it right get the ECU from it too.

Like the way you´re thinkin, man!
:p
I have a 94 LX too, and I say go for it! Keep us posted on what you do and how it works out. Maybe even take some pics and write a how to. Have fun!

The 1.9 IS an INTERFERANCE Engine, I promise. Mine interfered quite nicely when I threw my timing belt. Sounded nice and clunky inside. I thought it was a non too, so I went ahead and put a new belt on it and when I started it up it felt like it was only running on two cylinders. And sure enough it barly was even running on two. #1 still had good compression, #2 was borderline, #3 was way low, and #4 was shot.

Looks like a spelling error on my part on the thread title. That is bad... Should not be doing that as a college student lol... Well now here would be some of the obvious places to start. I definately at first will not go over 5 psi or so. Hey even the pulsar over here had a turbo for a while. When I do think of moving the boost up it would be after major work. Fuel system, built bottom end, headwork, cover all the bases. I do not doubt that 250-300 fwhp is attainable. Just is a matter of doing things right. And I am set on this approach. :)

Justin is right, the 1.9 IS an Interference motor, however my friend Amanda has a 1.9L in her Tracer and blew the belt and saved the valves (by luck or by divine help).

But if the timing is wrong on a 1.9L the valves will hit the pistons.
