Trying to swap speakers.... need help bad

Ok, I recently bought a 1997 Ford Escort. I believe it is an LX, but I'm not positive. It's an automatic, 4 cylinders, 4 door. Manual windows and locks.

I looked everywhere, and thought the speakers in the doors were 6.5". I went to install them, nothing wanted to fit right, and I finally measured them and found that the stock speakers were 6". So now I wasted the money on the speakers.

Also, the instructions I found to remove the door panel were totally off. The screws that it referred to were non existent or in a different location.

After I got the door open, I wasn't sure what wire was positive, and which was negative. There was no labeling anywhere. So, once again I went back to google, and from numerous sources I found that on the front left, the violet is +, and orange/blue is -. I didn't have an orange/blue wire at all.

Can someone please give me the correct information, and tell me what in the world I'm doing wrong??? I'm just don't understand why all of the information I find about this car is wrong, any help at all is greatly appreciated.

Im not sure on the wiring but you can just make the hole for the speaker a little bigger. A dremel is your friend.

I know I /can/, but that's not what has me concerned. It seems that everything I find on the internet about my car is wrong, and I don't understand why. Is there something different I should be doing?

Such as what? I've found on here that the speakers are 6.5" too... at the moment I'm pretty confused about this whole situation.
