Trying to adjust base ignition timing but car dies when spou

No matter where I put the distributor the car has only moments before the engine dies if I pull the spout to adjust base timing. If I try to restart it without the spout, the car will not restart at all.

Starts fine with the spout in place though.

Any ideas?
