OK, so I noticed today coming home from a friends this morning that transmission fluid was dripping down from behind the dash. I know it's coming from the speedo cable. When I had the dash out, the back of the speedo was damp from ATF, but I didn't think anything of it. This 'drip' today left a 6" diameter spot on the leg of my jeans this morning. Any idea why it's wicking it's way up the speedo cable? Is this a sign I need to change the fluid or something? Its the one thing I hadn't changed yet in the car. I've put 10k miles on it since buying it and this is the first it's done this.

It's a sign that the speed sending unit has a crack in it. there should NEVER be transmission fluid in the cable.

replace the sending unit, clean out the cable, and the leak should stop.

I looked, and the parts stores list 2 different speed sensors, one with 22 teeth,a nd one with 23 teeth. Besides pulling it and counting, is there a way to know which one I need?

yeah, the two different gears are different colors. Just match up the color.

If you aren't sure which you've got - do what I did - and buy both.

When you get the car apart at home, match it up to the right gear, then return the one you don't use.

You own an Escort - you'll be back at the parts store eventually.)
