Drivetrain Transmission Filter Change and New Fluid - Concerned

    I've received conflicting information from the parts store guys about changing the fluid and filter in my 98 Escort SE with an automatic.

    I doubt the fluid has ever been changed in it's 170,000 mile life - I can't say for sure since the original owner didn't seem to know or recall.

    I've heard two things:

    1) Draining the old fluid and installing new fluid (even if it's the correct approved fluid) will likely clean the transmission internals and take with it all the friction surfaces resulting in a broken transmission or a transmission that has slipping issues.

    2) Won't hurt a thing and the transmission will appreciate it.

    Anyone been in the same state of confusion on the topic?

    My opinion is changing fluid and filter is a good thing. I don't recommend have the transmission flushed.

    ^I second what DannyCO said. Don't flush. Dropping the pan to change the fluid and filter can only benefit. Main thing is replacing the old dirty filter to restore proper fluid flow.

    Its certainly not true that draining the old fluid will take any frictional material off of the 'frictional plates'. The will be already worn- off frictional material you find lying in the oil pan, in a mucky slime. Its entirely normal. There should be a couple of round magnets in there too - and they should be cleaned off thoroughly. This takes a good bit of time, since the stuff on them is powdered steel after all, and is clinging to the magnet. Also normal.

    If anything it'll reveal that your transmission has been sh*t all along. But it won't break a good transmission.

    BTW I changed my '97 at 196k shortly after buying it with 192k. I have no more problems than I had before.

    Fresh fluid and filter is a GOOD thing.

    And if the new fluid DOES break the transmission it was on its way out to begin with.

    Look at it this way, what is going to ' break ' a transmission faster? Old , nasty oil that is all broken down and hardly lubricates any more, or fresh clean oil? I tend to think that new oil is going to at least slow down the destruction of an already worn transmission. Most people would think it horrible to leave the same oil in their engine for 20,000 miles but then not give much thought to their transmission have the same oil recirculating in it for over 100,000 miles. Automatic transmissions make a lot of heat in their torque converters which breaks down the oil. If you want an automatic to work 200,000 and more the best thing you can do is just change the oil, or at least a lot of it, every 50,000 or so
