Hi all,

I have a '93 Escort wagon with a 1.9 and a 5spd. I believe the tranny for this year was the MTX5 -- please correct me if I'm wrong here.

The tranny has a couple of problems that are probably related: 4th gear syncro is bad and it kicks out of 5th gear. My assumption here is that the shaft bearings have worn out, which caused both of these problems (but I'm totally guessing since I have never had one of these trannys apart before.)

I HATE rebuilding trannys...I hate it. So I would rather replace it. My questions are as follows...

1. Will other models of Escort trannys fit -- such as the MTX 4spd?
2. Will the 5spd (TR5?) tranny from an '89 Mercury Tracer fit? The only reason I wonder is that I can get one of these for free if I pull it out...which I don't want to do unless I know it will fit.

Thanks in advance for the info.

I'm thinking other 91-96 1.9 trannies will fit, a 97-04 2.0 SPI will fit...

and I think that a 5 speed 1.8 GT will fit if you use your original clutch housing.

don't quote me though.

MTX4 in a '93?

There is an eBay auction for a newly-rebuilt MX4 tranny for only $44.99: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 7942195683

My '93 is a 5spd and the MX4 is a 4spd. Do you know if it will fit? At first I thought the buy-it-now price of $44.99 was a typo but I emailed the guy and he said that it is correct. For that price, it isn't worth me even tearing mine apart.

wouldn't an MTX4 be from a pre 85.5 1st generation escort.

I would say to figure out which year MTX5 had the best gear ratios. From what i've heard they changed the ratios like 3 times between 91 and 96.

If a Gt transmision might fit with the clutch housing, then what about the other mazda transmissions. I don't think anyone would care to figure out...
