My son has a 2002 zx2 that the trans oil pump has sprung an external pressurized leak when in reverse. The pump is heavily rusted on the outside. Anyone had success welding up a pinhole in the casting? Can you replace the pump without removing the trans from the car? It only has 120K on it, and works great when you can keep fluid in the trans. does not leak in forward gears. Thanks for any advice besides removing the trans. That will cause me to junk the car, as I'm not in for removing it when its 15 degrees outside.

Thanks in advance.

I don't now about the 2002 model year, or a ZX2, but it definitely looks possible to both remove the transmission pump on an older (1991-1996) escort.

In so far as welding up a pinhole, depends on your welding ability and tools. Consider hiring someone to do that part unless you are good at it and/or have a decent welder.

Pics would help better assess.

sounds like maybe there is a leak in the R circuit, it it was the pump its self or part of the HP circuit it would leak all the time. the pump never changes direction, so it must be an issue with the specific R fluid circuit. maybe if you could post a pic or 2 of the affected area would give us a better look at what is going on.. dont recall anyone ever mentioning pulling the pump housing in the vehicle. would need to most likely drop the valve body as well since they are connected by hosing.
