Older G5MR trannys have longer gears and the newer g25mr have shorter gears. 1st tops out at about 35mph on the newer and about 40 on the older 2nd about 65 and 70 on the older 3rd maybe 90 on the newer one 94 on the older one.

it just so happens that i have both a 91 and a 95 trans as well... IN PIECES, in my garage. they are NOT different.

if you look at those numbers, they were just rounded differently on 1-3. they are the same ratios... there is no way to have a difference of .003:1 unless you had gears with hundreds of teeth on them

there does exist a .97 4th and .75 5th for the G series, BUT it never came in the EGT, they all got the 1.03 4th and .795 5th.

this whole "different ratios in the early trannies" thing got started as a rumor... which continues to be perpetuated even though it has been physically proven to be wrong... annoying.

If anyone should know here its me
I have used and blown trannies of all years, all flavors, all colors

I have literally had all years 90-96 Escort and Protege Gseries trannies and there is no difference what so ever.. I have also had 3 or 4 apart also.

The gearing is
1st-3.307
2nd-1.833
3rd-1.310
4th-1.030
5th-0.795

4.105 Final Drive

For G5 and G25 Variants!

So if there the same tranny then why 2 different model #s Just wondering?
I aked this ? cause my 94 seems to be more precise in shifting but the 91 seemed to deliver more power.

I just took my 92 trans out because it was shot (guy never changed the fluid before me syncros were SHOT) and I put a 94 LX-E trans in it, it has the same rpm at the same speeds as the 92. I had heard the "earlier trans have better ratios" but have physically disproven it for myself, in 5th at 30 mph it's 1500 rpm, same as before, at 40 it's 2000 in 5th, both trans were exactly the same rpm. you know it's sad when you have to use OD going 30 though, 5th gear ha ha. but I love the GT's you can go in your top gear and go from 35 to 60 somewhat gently, good for rush hour!

so I definitely agree with therieldeal they're the same ratio.

4th and 5th are the same...I however did grenade a 91 which did have shorter gears than the 94 we installed. Yes 4th and fifth are the same. But first and second are not and possibly third. Newer ones are longer.

Ugh. No. No they're not.

There is no way the newer ones are longer. The old ones are UNGODLY long to start with, and as stated at least 5 times already in this thread, the ratios are EXACTLY the same.

Ok there has to be some sort of catch here. Like a fluke of some sort. There is wayy too much controversy between other people and I on this.

I have owned two 91 EGTs raced one, and am building a 91EGT for my roommate and we JUST installed a 94 trans.

Even ask neuman, he was the one who first told me the 91 egt trans' are shorter, and i even experienced it myself.

What i will say now is, just because they have posted ratios online and in manuals DOES NOT mean theyre correct in any way shape or form. Even a chiltons manual is wrong on the cam timing on my subaru.

There has to be a fluke. I know my vehicles and consider myself a decent driver who is very attentive to every aspect of a vehicle. Especially when driving.

How about this. Everyone post up their speeds at 7000rpm in first, second and third gear, and post the years of the vehicles. All egts in question. Lets prove it right now.

Uh... i can hit an indicated 68-70mph somewhere in there in 2nd gear... i have no idea what 3rd tops out at. This is a street driven car.

again lets post at 7000rpm not 7250.
I haven't hit the rev limiter yet, so i think we're ok.

That extra 250rpms in 2nd gear MIGHT get 3mph more.

DAMMIT... I'm telling you guys the gears are ALL EXACTLY THE SAME.

I can use the primary gearshaft from a 91 and the secondary gearshaft from a 95 and they MESH. Same tooth size, same tooth count, same diameter gears, SAME GEAR RATIOS. This isn’t wizardry nor is it rocket science.

Your whole 7K rpm in X gear test will not prove a damn thing. Escort speedometers are notoriously inaccurate from car to car. For example my 95 has 205 50 15 tires (smaller diameter than stock) yet I got stopped for going 77mph even though I was keeping my speedo between 68-72.

I thought 205/50-15 was stock? I could be wrong... these cars aren't my specialty or anything. :)

But yes... i agree with you. :D
