95 Escort LX
2.0L SPI Swap
Stock 1.9L Manual Tranny

I was going down I-20 yesterday, when I heard a loud pop... sounded like the car cut off everything got really quiet 8O (which is unusually with my exhaust). Then I realized the car was still running, and it kicked it out of gear, so I tried to stick it back in 5th... wasn't happing matter of fact I couldnt get it in any gear! I couldn't even get the damn thing to grind gears. About this time I started smoking like a stock car does when the engine blows... I quick cut the motor off and got off the highway... look under the car oil(tranny fluid) was dumping out from between the oil pan and transmission and has coated the bottom of my car  . Well I get her home.. and not thinking cause I'm so mad.. I didn't even check the oil, and I pulled the oil pan off *hoping* I could see something wrong up in the bellhousing. Well.. all the oil was still in the motor lol. Well I haven't had time yet to pull the tranny down to take a look, and I found this sight when I was looking for tech articles. Anything like this ever happen to anyone.. and if so please give some ideas please! And will a 2.0 SPI Manual Tranny fit without replacing axles and whatnot??

thats crazyness. the spi tranny will work but you need the clutch and fly from the spi since it has a bigger imput shaft. i was thinking about swaping the spi tranny so i can have the bigger clutch for my drag car.

You'll need the axels, the 2.0 ones are different from the 1.9 ones. And the Speedo is electronic on the 3rd gen trannys.

I dont think your tranny blew from too much power. Same thing happend with my 96lx SPI, but it all started when I broke the diff pin from too much wheel hop, so that was floating around inside the tranny. First it would'nt go into all the gear's, then it was stuck in third.

you would need the wiring from the donor car and the cluster its self. The 3rd gen gauge cluster is completely different from ours.If you look in the photo gallery I think chad posted a pic of his 3rd gen gauge cluster when he did a zetec swap in his lx.He decided to change the cluster at the same time.

Yes the 91-96 use a cable to turn the speedo, and the 3rd gens are electronic, but I have heard you can remove the electronic sender from the 3rd gen tranny and install the 1.9 cable speedo sender in it's place.

The 1.9 tranny can take a good amount of power, you just cant abuse it.
