This message was first sent to Atila but I would like all opinions. Also posted on ERDT. I took tranny in for repair and they returned it to me only in "better" shape. It was not fixed. I took it back and he tried again. It still was doing the same thing so the mechanic didn't even call me back to pick it up. He told me he was going to wait for a used tranny to take the housing off of because he thought it might be the housing since it still was bad. He took the repaired guts and put them into the new used housing. I didn't have the car for almost a month. That's ok because I didn't want to rush him and he seems sincere. I just got the car back and it's still the same. What do you think it is? The car starts fine, goes into second gear and third gear fine MOST of the time. It will suddenly just disconnect like I had put the car into neutral or something. Sometimes it will go from third into second. He said it's probably going to be some electrical problem since it's still not fixed. I had already thought that. I checked to see if this car has one of those computers that's for the transmission only but two Ford dealers said that it does not. What do I do about this 91 Escort LX with automatic transaxle? What could be going wrong? Thanks

I think I heard him mention to me that they did, as far as the valve body thing goes. However, even though he seems legit, it didn't sound like he wanted to keep stating each and every thing he did when I inquired. He saw I'm a novie. He actually went to the back with me and showed me the inside of another tranny pointing out what he did but I don't know enough to recall what it was called and what it meant. It was these little things that go in and out when you pull or push these little lever things in or out. I do know he has worked on it quite a bit. It's a six month warranty and I know he would rather fix it right and not have me coming back over and over again. Let's see what I can get out of him. What exactly should I ask? It will seem stupid to ask him since I know nothing of automatic trannys and here I will be asking him if he did this or that. I have a feeling that if he didn't do something he will not admit it. He may not be as sincere as I think he seeems to be.

I keep taking it back to the same guy because I already paid him and there's a 6 month warranty. Do you think I can just pay him that much money and then pay the same thing over again to another guy? No money back guarantee was offered. It's a 1991 Escort LX Hatchback with a 1.9 engine. What is a jet wash? Some high speed water cleaning device? Please check into it Mr. escort96lx Thanks

Did the mechanic that replaced your tranny replace your torque converter? It could be it stays locked up and doesnt disengage.I had a tranny replace 7 years ago on my old 91 and they rebuilt it and put a new torque converter on it.I have asked around and every place I talked to you replace the torque converter when you rebuild or put a new tranny in so it doesnt burn up your tranny that you just put in.

I could ask but somehow I think that with so much trouble that the guy would try replacing the torque converter. This wouldn't be the first time I've heard of converters getting replaced so he must have tried. I will find out Tuesday because he told me he wants a mechanic friend of his to look at it who does car electrical work.

It's really quite simple...are there any wires going to the tranny? if yes then it might be controled by the ECU if not then it isn't.

The simple fact is he gave you back a car that doesn't work. If he know what he was doing and cared about his reputation he wouldn't have given it to you until the probalem was gone.

Personally I'd take it back and tell him it needs to be fixed like you paid him to do or he needs to replace it with a rebuilt one that will solve the problem. you don't have to walk in like you own the place. Be polite but don't be a push over either.

Last week Thursday I got the car back. Finally it is fixed. As of today, Wednesday, there has been not a sign of trouble. When I took it back the last time he said it was probably an electrical problem. I had told him we could just forget it and that he could just give me back the money. He said he would take it to an electrician that came over to do the electrical jobs for him. He said he could not give back the money because he honestly replaced everything on the tranny and that before I came in the car did not go into third gear and now it did. That's true but I got scared the car might still not work right and I would lose $500 plus have to pay for electrical/electronic work and/or parts. Anyway, praise the Lord Jesus that it turned out to be electrical after all and that he did not charge me for what he paid the other guy. Maybe he got scared about a guy demanding his money and paid for the electrical work. Unless the guy did it free for him. Just to let you guys know it turned out well and $500 was a great price. Ofcourse, I was paying insurance for the 3 months I wasn't driving the car and didn't have the extra car for my wife so I paid in other ways. It was frustrating but now I'm relieved it's over.
