Ok I am in the process of changing my tranny fluid 91 gt 5spd, and when i initally drained the fluid only 1 quart came out, i thought that was a little odd, so i put in the 3.6 quarts that my shop manual says to put in, well i got to thinking and maybe the car had to be level to get all of the fluid out so, without thinking i took the drain plug out and yup all 3.6 quarts came out, so my question is, was my tranny working with only 1 quart of tranny fluid, and if it was would anything be hurt. and does the car have to be level when draining the fluid. sorry for the horrible grammer.

I´d say get her as level as possible before draining any fluids. Then let her sit for a while so that as much oil as possible can drip off of the gears. It´s quite possible that your tranny was operating with a bare minimum of oil. Once the gears start spinning they get coated from the oil touching the bottom gears again, so I doubt any real harm was done.

Did the oil you just used to "flush" the tranny have any bits of metal or grit in it?
