Indeed, and the weird thing is this isn't the first time I've had a crash that was so near fatal. And the sad thing is, all of this was my stupidity. I'm not taking a third chance again, already took TWO! After the accident it was as if my hair was all gelled up, but it was just stiff because it was fully soaked in dried blood. That was a pita to wash out.

I'm gonna try to find the guy who took a few pictures of it when it was running a few weeks ago. But I'll definitely post some pictures of the wreck here soon. I'm actually surprised how well it did despite the severity of the collision, I suspect the massive weight reduction played a big role in that.

The grand prix in which I once had a similar crash that I also pretty much should have died from looked like a pop can that someone stepped on. But the Escort still has most of the engine untouched, some suspension fucked, only because the body flexed. The wheel didn't even shatter. I'll show you guys soon.

I'm glad your ok. This reminds me of the wreak my dad told me he was in before I was born. A dump truck ran a red light and T-boned his car, I think it was a Pinto. He walked away and everybody that saw his car said he should have been dead. Racing seat with harness and you didn't wear it?! You probably could have walked away.

Your one of the most determined escorters on this board. Already onto your 3rd 3rd gen and no sign of quitting. Pics of the wreak are a must.

Thanks for the support :) it really helps keep me determined.

That's one thing I really regret, I had such a great harness and everything. I would have probably been completely unharmed other than a little bit of whiplash.

But there is one plus side to all of this. As badass as this 3rd gen already was, the third will even be better. From all my experience, whenever I have to do something over again, it really sucks to have to repeat everything, however I always end up with even twice the results because I've learned so much from the first time and came up with so many good ideas on top of that.

And another thing, as you'll see from the photos I'll post later, I got some good ideas from this accident on how to reinforce the frame on my next build to prevent as much unibody damage as possible if it gets in an accident like that again.

wow!! Glad you came out of that one without worse injuries than you got. After looking through the pics it seems like a bad location for the fuel cell being right in the front.

It survived the crash quite well though :). In fact I recently filled up my van with, when I took it out and remembered I still had two gallons in there. There's nothing like finding free gas laying around either in cars you're salvaging or working on. But you're right, had that thing burst and all two gallons spilled out it would have been enough to make a puddle at least as big as the car, and could have gotten quite ugly. But that's the risk I was taking I guess. Next build I'll be sure to have a fire extinguisher, or maybe I'll just relocate it to the back like the proper way it should be.

Gotta be honest -- I stopped feeling bad for you after the first sentence. Assuming you've at least learned something from all this, I hope you have a speedy recovery, and that in the future you may be less reckless with your car, your safety, and the safety of those with whom you share the road.

Do not forget this: That's the risk you were talking with someone else's safety. You weren't the only person in danger in this incident. It doesn't work like, "Oh well that's just the risk I took." The person with whom you collided while running the red light could have been in a small car, on a bicycle, a motorcycle, or even just walking across the street. Maybe instead of remembering to put a fire extinguisher in the proper place that it should be, you should remember to drive in the proper way that you should, so you don't nearly kill yourself or someone else.

Had I still had my camera (got stolen) I could have taken some nice pictures today. Finished taking the engine and drive terrain apart today, since the block was cracked at the mounts. Noticed the following observations after beating on it for 1000-2000 miles.

1. Flywheel (aluminum fidanza) and pressure plate (centerforce dual friction kit) were barely even touched, without any ridges, even though I dumped it pretty often.

2. Throwout bearing rusted quite a bit, probably need to make some kind of a water shield between the engine and transmission (since I got the zx2 tranny the original didn't fit.

3. Too much carbon in the head, but everything else was nice. My assumption is it ran too rich due to using the stock ECU (was in the process of converting to MegaSquirt) and having no emissions systems.

On a side note, I had quite a good laugh today. One of my friends told me I could have fixed the hood, when I told him I'll have to buy a new one when I find another escort. He told me I should have just used some filler and etc etc, he was actually being serious, which I found really funny.

Everyone tells me, I should do a zetec in the next one, or get a zx2, or do a v6 swap, but I don't know. I'm determined to keep the two basic areas which I started with, the CVH engine and the 4 door 3rd gen chassis. And I want to see how far I can take that basic setup with the next build, and go all the way. To me, that's what an escort is. What are your opinions?

Wow! I am sorry about your accident, but I'm glad you are alright. I hope you make a full recovery very soon.

I noticed on your list of modifications you listed a maunal steering rack conversion.

Is this a maunual rack from a pony, or was the rack simply de-powered?

I have a 1997 wagon that I am looking to lighten up and improve the mileage. Thanks for your help and, again, I wish you a speedy recovery.

Thanks, I'm getting much better, you know what... I'm gonna go write a quick short little article about that steering rack for you and so others can find it helpful too :). I didn't think about that but there are a few things to say in regards to that topic. Give me a couple hours.
