its funny how my topic got totally switched around
apparently....grand master mechanic tito has informed me numerous times that i know nothing about cars. I lied...I dont even own an escort. I own a snap together model of an escort. even then, i messed it up and put the engine in the passenger seat cuz thats where i thought it went. I know nothing about cars. hell, i dont even know how to drive one. So i'll just do everyone out there a favor and shut up. If you need anything done or need any advice, i recommend you to grand master tito. He invented the car. Rumor has it every auto shop in the nation is begging him to work for them. but you know what he says? He says "I am the car master, if i worked for you, cars wouldnt need fixed anymore." Talk about a pure mechanic. That guy has oil for blood. He drinks gasolene and has a combustion chamber for a stomach. I mean, the guy.....words cannot describe how much he knows. Wow...i mean...wow. I cannot believe i was that stupid to bat heads w/ tito, grand master mechanic tito.
Actually, that was a lot of sarcasm. tito, you have a real big attitude problem, and if you go back to your original post you'll read that sarcastic attitude about how youd "love" to hear my explaination behind my valves. If you go back to lots of other posts, you'll see that practically everytime i post w/ advice or an explaination you come back w/ some lil bitchass sarcastic remark. Its stupid, annoying, and getting old. I dissapeared for a while on the board because i got tired of your gay shit. You dont know everything and believe it or not, someone here just might teach you something. Seriously, just dont post to anything i say nemore alright? If i saw you person to person, i'd lay you out. Leave me the fuck alone.

Ok, sorry to bring this forum out from the dead...but ive got an update.
Fixed my flex pipe at a local exhaust shop. The guy was saying stuff to me(he's a family friend) and he was like, never drive on an exhaust leak like that at the header again. I was like i know, i'll burn out the valves. He said "damn right you will. And as much money and time u put into putting that new engine in, i'll smack you for it. I dont really know him all that well, its my parents friends. But neway, he asked me if i knew why it would burn them out and i said "because its running lean"
So, first off, i know i dont know everything and when i find something new out, i'll tell you guys. Tito, my bad for telling you the wrong explaination. It has nothing to do w/ burning lean or excess heat.(cuz actually once i got it fixed i went from 25mpg to over 30mpg again.)
The real reason it burns out valves is this. When you are running your engine on an open header and you shift, the rpms drop. During that drop, since you dont have back pressure, a lil bit of air is sucked back in through the header. What happens when hot metal instantaneously touches cold air?? instant cool down = instant shrinkage. He said when you run on open header, you run a big risk of cracking or chiping a valve. The more you drive it, the bigger the risk gets. Also, it causes the metal to colorize and the durability of it decreases causing the valve to burn.
So thats the explaination on why it does it. Like i said, i'm sorry for arguing a bogus argument.

Will running straight headers on a naturally aspirated engine cause any harm to the engine? Specifically, the exhaust valves.
To add to that - I'm currently running a cat-only exhaust system. The exhaust exits at the back of the cat, right underneath the shifter. I'm going on 3k miles.
As your friend at the exhaust shop told you, running no header at all "supposedly" causes harm to the exhaust valves by the cold air hitting them. No one has ever proved this. Ever. We're on the internet, find out for yourself.
As for your leak in the flexpipe, there is so much exhaust between your head and the flexpipe, you would have to have enough backpressure to blow the intake air back out of the intake for that to be feasable. On my last EGT, my exhaust exited before the flexpipe, it was litterally a header with 2" of pipe attached. That car ran like that for far more than 1k miles without any problems, and is still running today w/o a head rebuild. Even today, it has no cat, resonator, or mufflers on it, it exits in front of the passenger side front tire (like professional drag cars). I'll look up his email address if you'd like, he's more into his MX3 though.

The exact same 2.8L BMW engine in a 328i and a Z3 2.8 will make different torque figures because of the length of the cars.
In the little Z3, where the exhaust is shortened, the low end torque suffers a little.
In the 328i, the full length exhaust allows for a longer velocity stream of gasses at low RPM that results in more inertia which helps to scavenge the combustion chambers in the low end.
For the track, the lower weight and less backpressure in Tito's setup is optimal.
For a street car I'd reccomend a high-flow cat (to be green) at least a good perforated core resonator (to be neighborly and to retain the ability to think straight while driving) and a straight thru design with as few bends as possible that exits at the rear bumper. This will let your engine retain most of it's low end torque and still make nearly full HP.

OK I'll count that as 3 things. I've gotten hundreds of things I just can't think of anything else that's really memorable.
I once found a shiny mint 67 cadillac with black paint and black leather that some one had taken the motor and trans from, but the body and interior were immaculate. I asked the guy how much and he said $300, then I found a motor and trans and he said $500 for all of it. So I drove to the bank like a bat outta hell and got the dough then swung by the house to grab my tools. I came back just in time to see some idiot in a forklift putting down a chevy celebrity right next to it with the door open. The door ripped through the roof and then mangled the caddy's door. No sale! I went home almost in tears. I have yet to find a collectible that clean in that price range.
