I race a 1994 Escort 1.9L. I put a 1990 gt Throttle body on( which is a bigger diameter inside). I bored out the intake to match throttlebody size. Other cars with normal stock throttle bodies seem to be faster. Could I be breathing too much air. No other modifications except I moved trigger wheel a tick to increase timing.Normal cast exhaust manifold.

too much air - not enough exhaust... when you increase 1, you gotta increase the other....

Imagine a guy with a big mouth gobbling food but his asshole is small - alot to gain but too small of an exit.

until you can do something with the exhaust... close the plug gap down to .052.. let me know what you think.
