what´s the widest tire i can put on my stock ´92 EGT without rubbing? hypothetically, i could put a 215-50-15 on a 6" wide rim without a problem, but how wide can i go without rubbing on things i should rub against?
I was running 205/50V15 on my stock ´92 rims with no problems. I recently upped to a 15x6.5 with the same tires and the rears rub under hard, hard, hard cornering on bumpy roads (think Rallye GB). I will either roll or trim the fender lips next weekend.
Okay - this is personal experience. 205s rubbed on the front of my 94 gt. not by much, but enough that it wasn´t good. Others have told me that 205s will fit. I run 195s now and they fit fine. I suspect that with different wheels, the 205s would fit. My big problem was up front on the struts. the back never got to be an issue.
205 width tires should be 205mm wide at the tread... but.. it varies considerably from one manufacturer to the next. So do sidewall heights. So while some people will do fine with 205 width tires.. other will have a really rough time.
Yeah, I guess one would just have to try with the tires they have and see if they work. If I was gonna go with wider tires, I would get different wheels anyway. That, and the back end of the car is where the real fun starts, you have to worry about rubbing on both sides.
Actually, Beaverboy, the 205 should be 205mm wide from sidewal to sidewall, NOT at the tread. Also, the 205 is spec´d based on a specific rim width that the tire mfgr uses to determine its measurments.
