For those of you wanting to get new wheels and tires, here is a handly little tool. Input your original tire and wheel size and then size your new tire and wheel to match the diameter of your old one. Now you don't need to worry about them throwing your speedo off.

Tire Size Calculator

*Should note that this will not tell you how wide you can go. You'll need to check with your installer. To my knowledge no one has put anything wider then a 205 on an Escort without changing the factory backspacing.

Bolt Pattern By Gen.

1st Gen 81-90 4x108
2nd Gen 91-96 4x100
3rd Gen 97-03 4x100

Yeah they might be able to but your speedo will be off. The correct size would be 205/40/17

You'll need to check the clearance with a tire that size.

Yes Etienne, most `91-`93's with steallies come from the factory w/175/70R13's, or both my `91 Pony and my `92 wagon did. I think in `94 they bumped the steallies up to 175/65R14's to allow more clearance for the brakes. I know I tried fitting a 13" steallie on my mom's `94 w/14" steallies on it (blow out, only spare tire I had) and the thing wouldn't clear the Caliper. Same with my `95 LX Sport. Basically, I have 2 spare rims that only fit in the rear.
