what would be the premium setting for a ´91 EGT? I know the stock setting is 10, it says so right on the inside of the hood. when my crankshaft was screwed, my friend set mine at 11 and it ran like the best ever for 3 days until the timing went to shit again. but is there a better setting? what´s the best setting that won´t screw your car up...i know too much is bad. i tried finding out what mine was set at yesterday, but my dad´s timing gun was from the ´60´s and the damn light bulb was burnt out, plus you had to tap it straight into the distributor, because you couldnt just hook it to the #1 like you can with new guns.

i was just wondering bc i know my timing is still off and before i drive all the way to my friends i want to know what to have him set it at so i dont waste my time.

Timing needs vary depending on what mods you have done to your engine. If you have a hi flow filter and intake, or an aftermarket exhaust your timing will be different than somebody who has a bone stock engine. The 10 degrees that Ford specifies is just a basline in whitch to start at. Most cars aren´t even at the right timing when you drive them off the showroom floor. Anyway the best way to find out your optimum timeing is to use a vacuum guage, along with your timing light. as you adjust the timing watch the vacuum guage. It will rise and fall as you adjust the timing. Find out the spot where it is at it´s highest, and that should be the optimum timing for your vehicle +/- a degree or two. The best way to verify this is to use a calibrated 1/4 mile performance meter (a.k.a. Drag strip) Adjust your timing to it´s highest vacuum, then make a run. if you hear no knocking you should be good to go. if it does knok back off a degree and run again. Andjust you timing a degree at a time until you have your best E.T. it helps to make about three runs before each change to compensate for any error during the run.

I still don´t know that much about reading the timing, but all i know is that you kinda have to aim diagonally from the passenger´s side of the car closest to the cockpit...you´ll have to look for a while to find the marks, but i´m pretty sure they´re around there somewhere.
