Im not sure if this is a timing belt problem or what, but anyway I have been having problems with my car for the past 3 months, the timing belt has slipped off 3 times already, the car over heats. I replaced the water pump thinking that it was siezing up or something but it doesnt seem like thats it, so it broke down sunday and the timing belt tensioner poped off so I replaced that and now its making like a really loud pinging sound and doesnt start sometimes. Im like going ntus trying to figure out what this is and I cant, its been making a pinging sound for like the past month but I never figured out what it was, it sounds like its coming from the timing belt area to the oil pan cover, if anyone can help I would appreiciate it thnx. BY the way its a 92 ford escort automatic 1.9l engine

First thing I'd check is the timing.

Next thing would be the coolant level and all the other fluid levels.

Then the plugs for mechanical damage or excessive oil.

Then I'd check the belt tension.

Sounds like you have a multitude of problems.

I think your original problem was the timing belt tensioner. If it was not providing enough tension, it would have caused the belt to slip. If the belt was slipping, you should have heard some awful noises, your belt teeth might have been stripped and your engine would have struggled severely. I hope the timing belt has been replaced with a new one each time and installed correctly.

As for the other problems since, I'll have to go back and re-read.
