I bought a 98 zx2 that suposibly had a blown head gasket. I pulled the plugs and found clean cylinders and plugs the radiator is clean and the oil is clean. Hadn't gotten to the leak down test The only thing I've found wrong is the timing belt is shredding. Can someone tell what causes this belt condition? Anyone else seen this?
The engine has 160k miles with little maintanence..

I think you found the problem. Belts are supposed to be changed every
so often. Seeing as you don't need to change the head gasket I'd go for
a water pump and maybe a new idler/tensioner while I have the front of the engine open. I'd look the other belts over too while I'm there and see
if anything else got hit by flapping/flying chunks of the timing belt.
Clean up all the debris real well, check the timing on the cams 2 or 3 times and button it up.
Now it should be ready to drive for a while.

What about replacing the two piece crank gear with a one piece?
I will need a timing belt set plus the 99.5 gear right?

One thing that i have seen on the auto trans 2.0l is that the crank will start walking and cause the belt to wear off like that. I would check for excessive endplay before replacing the belt. You could have worn out thrust bearings, it is not uncomon.

New problem

I was turning the crankshaft to bring no1 cylinder to TDC.
I noticed the sprocket on the front cam would slip.
The key or spline is apparantly sheered.
Should I head for the junk yard to fetch a cam with sprocket or is this repairable?
IS this a key or spline?

Update

The cam only slips 1/4 turn seems spring loaded but thats the valve springs.
How do you if the cam is 180* off?
I'm a diesel mechanic this DOHC is a new hobby

That is the Variable Cam Timing clutch-thingymabobber on the exhaust cam. The ZX2 Forum guys can tell you all about that little jewel!

The reason your Escort is shredding timing belts is because of the fact that the timing may have knocked out of whack. Timing belts on the Escort can be a pain in the butt. Does it have the Zetec engine? Send me a reply back when you find out what is wrong with it.
