This isn't some pipe dream, and I do know quite a bit about these cars. I've owned five of them (three 2nd gens, two ZX2s), but never done an engine swap like this. I'm trying to find someone who's actually put a Zetec powertrain in a second-generation car. It's gonna happen, I just want information that may make it easier.
Here's the story: My brother wrecked his 99 ZX2. It had Progress springs, S/R struts, and a rear disk swap. I bought a 91 LX 4-door to run in 24 Hours of LeMons, with the intention of swapping as much from the ZX2 as possible.
The suspension and brakes are done (with the exception of front sway bar and some other minor bits, but the car is driving). I swapped the entire rear subframe as part of this process, so I have no problem getting dirty and doing heavy lifting. I've pulled a 2nd-gen driveline before, and I've done a clutch job on a ZX2, so I'm familiar with the process.
What I need is some tips on the swap. Specifically:
1. Fuel delivery. Can the LX fuel pump keep up with the Zetec engine, or do I need to swap that as well? Will the ZX2 pump fit in the LX tank? IIRC, the CVH engine uses a return-type fuel system, so there's a bung on the pump I'd need to plug, but that's no big deal.
2. Since I have a complete donor car, I'll be swapping the whole engine control wiring harness and the instrument cluster. Will I have any electrical issues to deal with that might surprise me? Is there something I should be sure to remember, or be careful with?
3. I'm expecting to have to swap motor mounts around. Does somebody know exactly which ones I'll have to swap?
4. Cooling. Will I be OK with the LX radiator? My guess is they're the same, but am not sure. I'll be running flat-out on a road course for hours on end, so it's gotta be able to keep up.
Those are the biggies in my head right now. Any other tips you might have would be great. Or juts point me to someone (hopefully an active member) who I can PM for details.
Thanks in advance guys.
