alright enough is enough already, these cup holders seem to shallow to old anything more then a bag of cocaine on a night out with a stripper! anyone else have problems with things spilling all the time? i dont wanna go buy a cheesy walmart cup holder...but im intimidated with building a full blown fiberglass console. anyone have any fixes?
what about if you did build a console?

based on your avatar you have a 3rd gen wagon, probably a 97. the cup holders on many of those were very shitty because they are just molded indents on the center console. You can swap this from part with a part from a later escort or a zx2. Since you likely have a graphite interior you should not have any problem finding a replacement.
if for some reason you do have a problem finding a replacement for this part I have one sitting here from an interior swap i did

Earlier (or later, I forget which) 97s had deeper cupholders with proper rubber inserts. I had two 97s and the second one I had bought had the useless one so I took the console out of the junker and tossed it in there.

Go find yourself a salvage yard and look around.

all 98-up 3rd gens have the deeper cup holders. the console piece is plug and play into your 97. you can also, if you want, swap out the ash tray for a small cubby from the newer cars as well. you'll still have the 12V power point, but lose the ash tray.

As far as I'm concerned the cup holders in the front are almost worthless. The cigarette lighter/12v plug is right in front of the passenger side cupholder so if you plug anything into it like a USB adapter you can't use it. The ashtray/cubby is inadequate to store stuff as any hard acceleration will have whatever you put in there spilling into the cup holders and on the center console.

Yeah it really is a poop design. Shifter smashes any larger cup. Or your hand does when it's attached to said shifter. Especially the automatic putting it into park.

I know, old thread, but will a 97 third gen console fit into a second gen 93 wagon?

Why would you want a 97 cupholer? They are almost as bad as 2nd gen ones, 98+ are the good ones. No, the console isn't a direct fit, you would have to cut it and it probably wouldn't look good.

Ah, I missed that the 98's were the good ones. Just had to ask, though; the cup holders are only good for 12 oz paper cups.

just for the record. these cup holders are still too small for a bag of blow with a hooker.

I use the "friction" cupholder between the e brake and driver seat.

    I am the hooker.

I loved smashing my Burger King cup with the shifter. Popped that lid right off.

I had one of the door fasteners that go on the third gens sticking pointed end up. When I put my large soda in there it poked the bottom and slowly filled the cup holder overflowing all over the damn place before I even noticed.

2nd gen... pull out console (4 screws) cut bottoms out of the cup holders you can fit something in or build up with fiberglass but really just cut the bottom out and you can set the cup all the way down to the floor pans on the tranny hub

I had a thought a while ago. What about taking out the (automatic) shifter, and replacing it with actuators? Using a dial for the selector, like the Chrysler 300's?

My wife says I should quit drinkin....;)
