Okay guys, the 2nd gen 1.9L guys have a thread about what mods to do to their cars, so I was thinking we should have one too. I'll start:

1) 3.8L Throttle Body Swap
---Junkyard

2) SPI Controller
---EscortFocus.com

3) Automatic Shift Improver (if you need one)
---EscortFocus.com

4) BDR Underdrive Pulley
(they stopped making them good luck finding one)

5) FC Shorty Headers
(they stopped making them good luck finding one)

and now if everyone adds one or two things our list will be insanely long.
I can't help at all. I don't even understand this language, but wish I did! I envy people who know all this stuff.

This is kind of an odd question and I hope this is the right thread. I have a 99(I think) Ford escort LX 2.0 spi. I plan on entering it in the 24 hours of lemons but do not have a lot of experience with this type of car. Car runs and drives good just wondering if there are some common weak points I should be aware of or possibly even some advice for the build. But going for fast, just no"blaze of glory" finishes

As far as I understand it, one of the tenets of 24HOL is you're restricted to a budget? If so, that will pretty much inform what you have available to you.

Off the top of my head, a CAI with Keman Mod and high flow filter would be a good start. HO header from a 1st gen GT for the SPI and no cat/resonator. 2.25" exhaust to a high flow bullet muffler or no muffler at all if you can afford it. Other than a turbo that's about all you have as far as increasing horsepower. Cams and head work will increase it but, again, coin.

I guess I'm more talking about weak points rather than making more power. Reliability is what I'm going for. Don't plan on buying much of anything except for the cage and some upgraded brakes which are allowed outside of the $500 budget. Weight reduction stiffer front and rear sway bars are all I really have planned for now.

The SPI's tend to have a valve seat problem so that would be my first place to look. Other than that the engines are pretty bulletproof so reliability shouldn't be an issue for you.

So, all of our cars are at least 20 years old by now. Is there anyone still building their engines? Are there still parts and mods available for cheap?

I vaguely remember reading about a small performance shop that built SPI motors for better-than-OEM performance years ago. They were about $2K at the time, but I can't remember who they were.
