Hey ALL,

Man i love this forum set up a bit wierd but what the hey.

I got a 95 gt and i am having a strong smell of gas. When the car is hot it is worse then when its cold. Could the gas lines be failing on me and contracting enough to close the leak? There is no actual leak of gas to the point that it drips. Just the oder. When it is hot out and the car hasn't been driven i get the same results. The smell seems to be near the middle of the car as aposed to the front engine bay or at the rear where the tank is.

I have isnpected the lines and havn't noticed any where that is obvose that there is a leak point. No drip pattern or extra crap built up on anything.

All help is welcome.

Yeah, because that one gasket is what seals the tank. Mine was bad, couldn't really smell it outside of the car but it was really strong inside the car, and if I put more than 8 gallons in the tank it would leak out.

I used a silicone gasket maker, black rtv, I'm not sure how long it will last but I've filled the tank twice so far, and it's worked.

black RTV FTW!

yeah those fuel tank o rings go bad and are a pain when they do go, huge pain, I hope it don't happen to my scort ever.

yeah most likely cause would be that tank O ring, if it's not that check your filler neck hoses and see if they are all good, that could be a place that would go bad too. just take the back seat out and the fuel pump is under that silver cover that is held on by 4 screws, just take that off and take a look.

I had the same problem, Anymore than half tank the car would reek of gas!!!
I ran to the parts store and in the "Help" accessories/parts and found replacement o-ring and retainer($8 at O'Reilly's auto parts). I used "Syl-glyde" compound to condition seal and make for easy and correct installation. I bet that is your problem, also when happy with job, I put a small bead of RTV on the access cover to curb any fumes entering the pass. compartment. That was really important to me because I haul the kids in the car daily. Gives you an opportunity to replace the pick-up tube on the pump/sender. The org. "regulator" can bleed off fuel pressure during hard right turns causing loss of power or engine stalling. Fixitmattman has a good how-to if you wish to check out. Performing this repair on mine allowed for less issues with even less gas.

O LowetGt where would i be wit out ya. Same wit the Escort92Man. Real MEN of genius. Bud light should make a commercial about you just like they did the Mens Room.
:thumleft: :thumright: :w00t:

Going to tear out the back seat today to see if that is it.

Since i am tearing more stuff out of my car then i have put back in any ideas how to fix that peice of crap plexi board. I was thinking of Homey Depot and just buy something close. I want a full peice that has a lift gate for the spare tire. That way i could mount my sub box on the board and not have to worry about it sliding around the trunk.

I also need to fix the i think its called h-vac "a/c and heater"controls. The cable that drives the vents in the car is busted. Not the cable but the area where the cable look like it slid. The thermostat part still works as well as the fan switch. Just couldn't seem to be able to get it out. Is it Vacuam controled. Would i just junk yard it or is there a way to make a metal bracket?. Will get pics of what i am talking about and post up. I can't find brackets that small.

Ok enough rambling time to wrench.

That hatch cover you are talking about; the easiest and nicest way is to JY search until happy. Don't forget to snag some of the hold downs from the trunk trim (they are extremely brittle when not careful with them.) I would cut a 3/8" thick mica board to cover spare. I had the want years ago (when I had a system, but someone was nice enough to relieve me of) was to build a box with had a deep u-channel in the top, so the rear strut tower bar would lock it down into place. That never happened because I have a wife and 2 kids!!! Escort92man and I chat frequently on facebook. If you want to see my pics: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=3 ... 5b4bf407ff

lol, thanks man, but I only talk from experience of what I've done and seen!

when a connecting rod goes banana shaped on you then I get to walk you through how to replace a connecting rod, ha ha just kidding that won't happen unless you're turboed and running a TON of PSI or the timing belt goes on you while driving and there's a TON of carbon on top of the piston.

ok back on track ha ha. yeah Lowetgt and I chat on the facebook there, good place to stay connected for fellow escort owners!

if anyone is seriously interested I will do a write up on how to do the trans 5th gear swap!

I drove my car mostly freeway today and you can't pull a 45ish to 60 quick like you could before but give it some gas and you do get there eventually, I didn't have to downshift to 4th going up a hill at 60 on the freeway, before in my 1.9 scort I had to tap into 4th but the GT still can pull it in 5th with out lugging at all.

I love the 5th gear swap! and it's something anyone who knows how to wrench can do, rip into the junkyard car and learn how it goes before you touch yours then you'll know ;) after I pulled 5th out I was uber confident I could do it myself and I did and it works, I put the probe syncros in too they were in way better shape, cleaned everything up with paint thinner, it works good! like I said before it's a tad over 2,500 rpm at 60 now which is right where you want it for economy and power, better economy and still enough power to go up some steep grades at 60, I think the one hill I pulled was an 8% up grade. and it was fine.

ok I'm done rambling now. and if you look at me you think "that doesn't look like the guy that knows all this stuff" here's a facebook pic of me ha ha, I have fun! http://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak ... 6825_n.jpg I love that shovel at MT ST Helens ha ha!

ok guys keep em rolling and take a junkyard car's fuel pump out just for practice so you get how to do it on yours, that lock ring can be tricky, a flat head screw driver and hammer works well, really well. I don't think there's any other method to take that stupid ring off with.

and I have subs in my GT, 2 10's they hit hard enough for me to enjoy my music, they aren't bolted down though shame on me, I am going to bolt them to the backs of the back seats so when I fold the back seats down, I have a full trunk back there! yeah.

ok I'm done lol, you got a myspace or facebook there Drunkinmist?

Ok so i pulled out the back seats to see what you all where talking about. I am not sure what i looking at because i haven't messed with that tank much. Here are the pics.

What should i be taking apart. :study: I smell gas here but since i got it open and its only a couple of bucks to fix then i will do it.

What should be replaced?
And do i have to disconnect all these lines to replace?
Should there been a ton of dust and crap up here?

Wow, how many miles are on this car? Mine didn't look NEAR that dirty. But... because it's dirty, I'm going to say that your gas leak is not from there, because gas is an excellent cleaning agent. Here is what mine looked like...

Yea your right. You defiantly had a leak there. It looks like mine lived down a dirt road. Its got 196k on it. I am not looking to any heavy engine moding on mine. Just want to get it running nice and tight.
So since its not this then were to?
