this is something i do to all my cars because i like to listen to the radio while i work or clean it with out listening to that anying buzzer. i know on the zx2 maby the 3rd gen to but take the shroud off around the colum. there are three screws. if you look at the key cylinder there is a white box on the side pop the top off that and there are 2 white with red wires clip the 1st one. that will disable the key in ignistion buzzer. what that means is you still have a buzzer at start up and if you leave ur lights on. i just find it less anyoing if you do that.

Could you differentiate between "first" and the other white/red wire?

Also, is this going to adversely affect an aftermarket security system at all, specifically the door pin/dome light connections?

The wires from the (black) electrical section of the ignition switch to the little white plastic switch next to it may be various other colors; especially on aftermaket replacement ignition switches. Clip either one, & the buzzer is silenced. Nothing else on the original Escort wiring is affected. Thats the first thing I did to each of my 2nd gen. Escort LXs having the automatic transmission.

I dont know about an aftermaket security system. Silencing the 'key-in-door-open' chime has no affect on the door switch that turns on the dome light.

The second thing I did was to wire down the interlock at the shifter that requires you put your foot on the brake before you can take it out of park; since almost everywhere I park it is basically flat. Now I can shift out of park without the need to apply the brake.

On my Escort the pin that pushes out to break the "key in" circuit wasn't pushing out. Normally it pushes another pin (the actual breaker) away from the retainer bars. These bars are what connects to the wires some people were cutting.

My method allows the pin/spring to be reinstalled if necessary.

1. Remove fuse for dome light (its the 10amp one that sticks out)
2.. Remove steering wheel column cover
3. Pry open white box on lock mechanism (pictured)
4. Push pin out from under retainers.
5. Find spring the has shot into oblivion.
6. Push breaker back into white box
7. Reinstall column cover.

The chime for "key in/door open" is now disabled. Turning on the headlights with the door open will make a chime, as well as the normal startup chime.

i just cut the wires to that white piece. it makes it easier for me to change the ignition switch. i still get the chime for when i have my lights on and door open, and the seat belt chime but that's it.
