everything you need to know about swaping the 1.9 out and droping in the SPI(almost literal) can be found here:

http://www.cardomain.com/id/jeffescortlx

basics:
-use the SPI MAF with the SPI. the 1.9 maf will make you run rich. the 1.9 had 15# injectors and the spi has 19#.
-90% of the 1.9 parts work on the 2.0
-the 1.9 computer can control the 2.0 withought a problem
-you MUST use the 1.9 clutch/flywheel on the 2.0

DONT CUT THE CKP WIRE.

Note to those doing a 2001-2002 SPI swap. You will need the Injector, IAC, and TPS plugs from a late model 2.0 SPI spliced onto your 1.9 harness. Also you will need to reuse all the old 1.9 senders for oil pressure, water temp, and fan switch. Other then that all the other plugs should connect fine.

i wasnt either besides the typical diy work like springs etc.. jumped right into it on my own.. got it done flawlessly.. take your time tho.. basically just look at it as swapping the old 1.9 out and a new 1.9 in except for wiring here and there.. picked up my 40k 97 spi from mobile for 250 (hour drive) and been happy with it ever since june 04 launch date :)

two quick engine questions

1. On which car(s) does the SPI engine come from?

and..
2. when doing the 1.9-2.0 spi engine swap... which 1.9's will work? how about an one from 88EGT with (1.9 EFI HO) ??

1.SPIs are found on the 97-02 ford escorts as well as focus sedans (4dr, the zts model had the zetec) The Focus SPIs will not mount properly in the Escort engine bay.

2. 91-96 year escorts is a straight swap with the above slight electrical modifications required. You could probably get the SPI to mount in a 1st Gen Escort engine bay, since the engine mountholes on the CVH block shouldn't be different (just use the 1st gen mount). As far as ecu and wiring, best bet is to just swap over to obd1 stuff (91-95 ecu and harness) You could use the 1st Gen tranny (should bolt up correctly) and associated drivetrain. This hasn't been attempted yet to the best of our knowledge, so if everything has gone to plan thus far, there might be other modifications you will have to do to get it all to work right (checkout www.fordexp.com for a scare  ))

I wouldnt necessarily start with swapping to a 2.0spi unless you have the money and really want to do it. There are much more things you can do to your 1.9 before you swap that are also compatible with the 2.0 spi, since they're both the same type of engine, sohc cvh efi, exceptions are 1.9 vs 2.0 liter (bore and stroke differences, the 2.0 pretty much maxes the cvh design out on bore) split runners per cyl in the intake manifold and head that iscolate the torque and horsepower bands, thus enhancing them. 2.0 crankshaft has twice as many counterweights for a smootherpowerband (not necessarily a 'free-floating' design tho ;)) a lot of other things.. checkout www.cardomain.com/id/jeffescortlx and my cardomain in my sig for more info

Alright, I have been reading the forums for a couple hours, and I am starting to get interested in this engine swap. I have a 94 LX Wagon, 1.9 SOHC. From what I have read, it has a whopping 88 hp. How much of an increase would it be to upgrade to the 2.0 SPI? What year engine would be optimal to search for? Lets just assume I have all the time in the world to work, and I am not afraid to spend the money needed.

Thanks in advance.

it is a 25% increase, to 110 hp. You want to get a motor from a 97.

I have a few questions. What is the difference between the two exuast manifolds, other than the egr? Also, is it possible to swap in the SPI ecu at the same time or do they just different connecters? Beucase that would eliminate the need for the SPI controller.

Also - an rpm switch can be found on ebay for about $15-20. :)

You could swap over to the SPI ECU if you wanted but you'd have to gut the engine bay harness and use an SPI harness. Also you would need a 97 ECU and wire harness or you'd have to switch fuel systems too. Just a heck of a lot easier to do an RPM switch and run the SPI off the 1.9 ECU IMO.

yeah for sure. I was just wondering if it would plug right in.

I'm thinking about doing this swap. I have a 93 Tracer Wagon that will eventually get a BP (maybe BPT) swap. But, I think it's floating a valvle and has been popping for about 2 months/800 miles. I can get a complete motor for $150 w/exchange from the JY.
I thought that these were just head swaps???
But, I see that the whole motor swap is being done. That's OK if it's the better route, and I won't have to buy a head gasket ($).
So, when I get the motor what do I want to get with it. Keep in mind I can take stuff from other years and throw them on there no problem while I'm at the JY.
And, is the controller really the only hard part I need to get? And, if I don't have right away, I can do without it for a short time?
Oh, I have a 1.9 EGT HO header, would you recommend I use it? How much lower will it sit? (I'm putting the zx2 sr struts/springs in soon)

Let me know, and thanks for you help.
Bill.

The motor is pretty much bolt in but the tranny won't work without the 2000 ECU. And trust me you don't want to switch to that because you will need to convert the fuel system and do a bunch of other crap as well.

So we can use the 3gen trani's but we can use the 3gen engine. So were would somebudy look for a stronger trani? Has anybudy ever knifed a 2.0 crank? Also does this engine resond well to UDP's?
